Well after defending how great these lights are, mine finally died. Got 2 years out of it, no reason it shouldn't have lasted 10 though.

My Cygolite Hotshot is going strong. I've gone a month cycling without charging it (40 hours of use). Super bright and great battery. Couldn't be happier.

Drat, that's not good.
Mine is going well, very happy with the big pool of light behind the bike, certainly gets attention.
Getting about 1:15 on maximum strobe before it switches down to the lower setting.

Well, finally got the thing around two weeks ago, and on pure lighting ability it kicks multiple asses.

However:
Why design it so that twisting the end off (instead of pulling it off) will destroy the circuit board?
Why design it to require that much force to remove the end to charge it? Some kinda plug (see every other usb charged device in the world) would do the trick.
Mounting strap pretty much only works for a seatpost application.
The vent hole for fitting the charging cap back on looks like it was made by a schoolkid with blunt pocket knife.

Anyway, MacGuyver'd up a mount using a single DETA Brand Conduit Mounting Clip PVC 25mm - pack of two for 40 cents (!)from Bnnnnings - and a small strip of tube rubber to stop it slipping round, then bolted it to my Supertourist rack. Works a treat.
Next MacGuyering will be to sort out the charging port nonsense before I inadvertently break the thing.

NiteFlux suggest vaseline to pull the cap off more easily. I went with silicon spray and it's been slippy enough for a few months. Also found pulling the side out a bit to leave an air gap when pushing the cap back on helps as the air release slit isn't quite large enough (and I'd rather not cut it further).

If there's rubber involved (not knowing the design of the light) don't use Vaseline, it buggers up rubber o rings, silicon lube is what you want.

So did you guys buy the 8 or the new RZ4?

I was sent a replacement for a warranty on the previous RZ4 and thought that it was an 8, until I checked the website a couple days ago. The new 8 has 2 bulbs at each end and the 4 is one at each end. Not too fussed, just thought I'd point it out.

Re mounting the thing, I've got rid of my saddle bag/tool bottle altogether as my stem just wasn't long enough. Now I carry all my tools inside a ziplock bag which goes in my jersey pocket. I've managed to arrange it so it fits together nicely and is quite a small tight pack.

Touch wood I won't come off the bike onto my back as landing on 3 co2, a mini pump, some Allen keys, a tube and some patches can't be fun

That's why only soft stuff goes in my jersey pockets. It shouldn't be hard to find a (gruesome) pic or two...

Finally got the time...

So, I got the RZ4, by accident (finger trouble at the keyboard) but no matter, it still kicks asses.

My woes with the 1st generation RZ4 have already been fairly well documented, however I did always say that (while it worked), it was the best quality light that money could buy IMHO.

That being said, I have finally decided to bite the bullet and order one of the new RZ8 models, and (so far) I'm pretty darn impressed with it.

It's only been on the bike for a couple of weeks now though, and (same as the last model) reliability is ultimately going to be the deciding factor here.

Fingers crossed that this one fares a lot better in that department!!!

After all the problems that I had and the complete lack of response to my last request for a warranty replacement has done the dash with me.

I will never buy from them again or recommend them.

SWMBO has used the Serfas version of these (Thunderbolt) for the last six months with no dramas, and it's plenty bright. Only downside is run time is a bit limited for longer rides.

One of my local bike shops has those, very bright but that runtime isn't much chop. I got a Moon Gem instead which isn't anywhere near as bright but still pretty damn good and has a great runtime. A good price too, and the usb recharging is so much better than AAAs.

The Thunderbolt and the Comet are both USB rechargeable.

Just bought one of these... Super bright and rated at 9.5 hrs use on flashing mode.
