A cyclist has no control over traffic passing from behind.Your very life is in the hands of the passing motorist who offers varying degrees of consideration for your safety.The solution is simple.Put a sign on your back or on your bike that directs the motorist to pass well clear.Make it large,bright and brief so it attracts the motorists attention.This idea does work and is an incredible safety initiative.Look at my blog by googling bikesign.blogspot.com to discover various signs etc. and action photos of their effectiveness.

To mattwilkinson.I think you are trying to say motorists will behave aggresssively to a bikesign.You are correct, for a small number do abuse you.At least they have seen you, and hopefully avoided you.I am disappointed with the design of the tops produced by the Amy Gillett foundation and Safe Cycling Australia.They do little to protect the rider on the road, being from such an unusual design perspective,from above!and being overly complicated to interpret, particularly for cars approaching at speed.
A golden opportunity exists here for these organisations to push the 1m. clearance idea if they wish and at the same time protect riders on the road by using the simplified, briefer,clearer,larger 1m. bikesign as shown in my blog at bikesign.blogspot.com

To anyone reading these posts.Have you experimented with a bikesign yourself? It is easy to do. Just grab an old T shirt,preferably a bright colour, and a large black texta.You can use one of my designs at bikesign.blogspot.com or make up one of your own.Please report back to this site on its effectiveness.Another cyclist was killed today.I don't know the circumstances perhaps a bikesign may have helped.

Not true. I exercise some degree of control over the traffic behind me using 'vehicular cycling'. If you're unaware of what that is, I suggest that you do an internet search for the term.

Everyone who has bought one of our SCA jerseys has reported changed (perceived or actual is debatable I admit) driver behaviour when overtaking or driving anywhere near. We're happy with our jersey, however... Who'd buy this thing above? Could be a goer.
