Ricardo and real Malvern Star would be nice.

Are you including small manufacturers like Bates Bikes who used to work out of an iron shed next to the Batman train station in North Coburg, Victoria?

They stopped making bikes in the late 70's because of the cost of putting their bikes through the Australian Standards Process.

I picked up a bike off EBay the other day. Late 80's Tange 2 frame, branded as 'Atom', imported by "Atom Industries" - can't find anything even close when googling. Model is 'Ultralight', even comes with a sticker saying "intended for competition use only".

When I was living in Mosman Park as a teenager riding my old Raleigh I seem to remember that there was a shop in Claremont stocking AVOCET road bikes.

We used to get 'Spokesman' bikes here in Canberra - I think that they were assembled by a local shop, rather than manufactured here.
What about Europa?
And Apollo? Although they're back in the market - as are Gitane - after a break.
Some-one's mentioned Graecross in another thread. I checked this morning and there's a Constellation under a friend's house.
Litespeed Classic - 3Al/2.5V titanium tube set, Record 9-speed groupset, Open Corsa Evo CX
Alchemy Diablo - Columbus Zonal tubing, Ultegra 9-speed groupset, UltraGatorskins
Gitane Rocks T1 - U6 tubing, Deore/XT groupset, CrossMarks

Norm Bates ceased production of Bates' frames in about 1985 or 6 due to ill health (the after effects of an assault). Australian Standards had nothing to do with it.

I think you are avoiding the real issue here and that is, what the hell is Batman doing with his own train station in Victoria? Is there also a bat train somewhere out there that I haven't seen & that I would be able to ride?

Thanks 531db for the clarification. I used to pass the shed everyday on the way to high school. A friend of mine got a bike especially made for her and it was at that time that Norm said they were stopping 'mass production' and focussing only on specially made bikes. That's probably where my confusion came from.

kind of still around as the INDI name dropped the 500 back in the 90's. Their new owners are supposed to be revamping the brand for 2009.

My pick is :
Legnano
3Rensho

Bennett is gone, sadly.

Diamondback is still around, having just come out the other side of a time where they produced nothing but rubbish. Now they're churning out some awesome looking machines.

Avocet Cycles, 27 St Quentin Avenue Claremont
Sorry for reviving an old thread but I just pulled my old Avocet out of the garage. :D
Made for me by Avocet in 1982 and used as a daily commuter for many years, it hasn't been ridden since the early 90's but everything still works fine.
Now it just needs a good clean and a service. :)

Denti, hardly (if any) presence in Oz that I've seen.
