$19,000 what bike/s would you get?

Postby Fe » Sun Jul 21, 2013 11:03 pm

A friend in the US had a couple of bikes stolen from his garage. Trek Madone and a Venge, both with Zipp wheels. He is not really impressed with the break in, but his insurance is paying him out $19k for the bikes. He isn't getting cash, but $19k credit through his insurance companies bike supplier, who can get him any bike brand he wants.

So if you had $19k to drop on bikes, what would you get?

I'm not sure if id get two bikes Colnago C59 and a BMC SLR01 or drop the coin on a single glory bike, Cervelo RCA Di2 with Lightweight Rims.

I'd get this, a decked out brompton, a decked out BMC SLR1 and still have plenty of cash to spare for MTB/cyclocross or upgrades

If there ever was a good time to spend that sort of money on an item that is going to plummet in value, this is not it IMO.
The uncertainty over disc brakes' being allowed or not by the uci in the near future would have me holding back. He probably cant though :(
There would be significant pressure behind the scenes from manufaturers eager to render the current crop of roadies obsolete, so they can sell a new crop :x
Discs fix the issues of carbon clincher rims overheating. They will come in I reckon.

When is a good time to spend a lot of money on a highly depreciating product?

Interesting misspell there.
Leading edge bikes become obsolete pretty quickly these days anyway. Just look at your S5 for example. :P AFAIK my Surly CC is still the current design after 3.5 years. :D

I doubt this alone will be enough reason to sell them to hard-core racers who are counting grams and worried about aero drag. That is even if the UCI allows them. Would you buy a Cervelo with discs to race, knowing there is about 10% more bike aero drag? Discs are a real-world solution, but not a road racing one at the moment IMO. Aero disc designs might change in the future though.

A custom build, for sure.

I'd probably fly to Italy to meet Dario Pegoretti and have him build me a bike while I wait... 8)

A Cervelo Rca is a glory bike?

I'd probably start with one of these.

I'd get a custom built bike CX bikes with discs, pannier racks and large tire clearances with guards.

I'd commute on it, tour on it and use it as a wet-weather road bike.

I'd get two bikes, R5 or BMC slr01 or C59 and a S5 or Propel or Venge.

$19,000 is an obscene amount of money to spend on a bike. Damn first world problems.

Agreed. I'd have trouble justifying spending more than about $1000 on 2 bikes. That's all I'd need, really: one really good example each of a tourer/commuter bike and a road bike, and I'd be happy. The rest could pay for a cycling tour trip to Europe (or even more than one?).

Both of these will do nicely thanks. If there's any change, I'll look at a Llewellyn.

Read the original post - the money is a credit so he has to spent it on bikes.

Ronk...you are right, he has to as it is a credit...but it also means he spent 19k or more in the first place to get such a credit....

The S5 is still a current design, but yes it will inevitably be superseded. That's alright though I'm already an obsolete never was. ;)

Aero disc calipers will come once discs are permitted.

I'd go straight to Lynskey and drop some $$$ on top end Helix OS, then with change would also get a CX complete build as well. That would probably still leave enough for a 29er as well :-)
