My adventures this week.
Day 1- 2 swoops
Day 2 - 7 swoops, last one drew blood on my left ear.
Another mate got hit by him this week as well and stopped. The maggie just kept at him. He's an angry bugger.
I forgot to add the two hits I got from one bird while MTBing a couple of weekends ago.
2x contacts: 4
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
Forget magpies... I'm being bombarded with large black beetles and march flies! They sting a bit when they hit you in the cheek at >40km/h. And one dared to go through one of my helmet vents, after which I had to stop and remove him!
Passing on your right - me, said just about never...
Wear a glove and throw your hand up in the air like you are going to swat it, i found they keep about a 1meter distance from you, they dont want to run into your hand. Next best thing to wearing no helmet/hat.
Three swoopers at Perry Lakes (WA) earlier in the week and one today near Bellvue. Those I could deal with, but the black cockatoo pooping in my eye was something I could do without.
Chatted to a guy during the ATB from the La Trobe Valley who has had maggies hang on the back of his helmet and lay into him! I could see the bash marks.
The lazy buggers up here can hardly be bothered leaving their trees to swoop. I've stopped counting and adding because of my pathetic total.
It’s more like our thoughts are thinking us than we are thinking them.
My newish S-Works helmet is full of holes, mostly down 1 side and mostly from 1 bird, he's even managed to put a hole through the shell in one spot and cut me on the face near my eye twice. The Mrs thinks I should replace the helmet but, replace for damage from magpie stike?
what if one was to charge a capacitor up with electricity from a big sub woofer from your car stereo and 2 bits of thin copper wire sticking out of holes in helmet , thus when the pillow stuffing winged devil grabs onto helmet ,WHACKO RIGHT UP HIS CLAKKER and he wont come back , the discharge of 1500volts should tell him/her to flap the fudge outa here!!!
(not sure if he makes contact and also rider , will check on theory)
but worth a laugh!!!
I'm done with magpie season, no swwops in 3 weeks - just a few fly buys but nothing purposeful within the 1.5m de-restriction zone.
2013 total = 72 points
3rd class cycling is always better than 1st class walking
I got swooped twice yesterday.
The bird laid off for a while but has started again now, not as aggressive as before though.
The most aggressive bird in the area is no longer swooping people though as I rode that way several times safely recently!
Twice by the same bird (once each way), MacAulay Park in Duncraig WA on Christmas Day. This is a particularly nasty critter, too - I tried waving him away then he started attacking my arm!
OK - not a magpie, but do ducks (on foot) count? There's one at the Footscray end of the Maribyrnong River Trail that's taken a liking for going at my leg as I ride past. Three times so far and I'm pretty sure it's the same duck each time. Not much pecking ability but could probably give you a nasty suck.
