So it ran into the spokes then got swept into the fork?!

Talk about a freak accident! Would have thought the squirrel would get more mangled than that though...

That's not terribly rare, from what I've seen on the MTB forums. Usually the squirrel isn't in one piece after they encounter a mountain bike. Carbon forks just aren't as tough as 32mm stanchions, I guess.

As for who won: I'd day the rider got the better end of the deal - he gets a free chopper ride, whereas the rodent just got chopped.

Cheers,
Graeme

I was actually expecting to see rodent gnawed forks you know, like he had peanut butter spilt on them and they got chewed away.

When you see the photos of mangled critters wrapped around MTB wheels, I'd be saying "Holy Crap - who the hell would ride carbon forks?" (in North America) The squirrels aren't that strong! Those forks look weaker, though.

Cheers,
Graeme

Don't forget, carbon fibre is built for strength in specific directions, when force is applied where it usually shouldn't be then carbon fibre fails explosively.

MTB forks are universally stronger & heavier though, even rigid carbon MTB forks weigh much more than light carbon road forks.

I am still surprised that the carbon road fork didn't win though.

Not surprised if there's adequate speed on those wheels. Maybe there's something to be said about a disc wheel in squirrel prevention.

I wonder if any of the spokes let go. I thought the spokes might break first.

Good sales point, I'll have to tell my wife it's only humane that I buy an $1100 disc wheel to save cats, rabbits, foxes and small dogs from a similar fate :D

Great! Gives even greater confidence in my Ksyrium ES. Their "bomb proof" reputation wasn't established on thin air.

Jeeeezus, hope the bloke came out OK.

Had one of those little yappy mutts try that to me old rigid Apollo MTB mumble years back, it screamed and bolted back into its unsecured yard while I kept going with a 300+ HR.

Little mongrel tried it again a couple months later, on three legs  Avoided the place for a while after that...

Mm.. interesting :? . I think we should try to recreate the experiment under controlled conditions on both a steel and ally framed bike.

Maybe say, half a ring tailed possum = one squirrel?

Or perhaps this is one for Mythbusters?

sorry.. I'll back under my rock... carry on everyone...

A steel fork would ensure there's only half a possum

Or even more rapid deceleration (without the energy absorption of crumpling CF) and potentially greater injury.
