My ideal stable should have...

A commuter
A single speed pub bike
A road bike
A dual suspension MTB
A touring bike
A spare bike

My actually stable has:
A MTB commuter
HALF a road bike! (see this thread)
A hard tail MTB (I can't justify the expense of a dually)
A 'touring' bike (this is actually a flatbar roadie I never use, its at my parents and I encourage my father to use it)
A spare bike (a crappy old mid 90s roadie)
A 2nd spare bike (My bike from when I was 12 years old. I lend it out to people in exchange for a PINT. Currently a nice Sweedish girl has it!)

Just three for me:

1 x fast, comfortable road bike for medium to long rides (in progress)

1 x touring / allround for even longer rides plus shopping etc. (done)

1 x Cinelli Laser with C Record for sheer bling value (I'm going to have to make myself a replica, can't afford the $15k for an original).

I just can't seem to get it right. I bought a new bike... And it so eclipsed the other one that now I want to upgrade the other one... It just never ends....

Yes.

Use the cash to buy an MTB and start a Fixie project

I only have room for 2.

First iteration: Hub gear belt drive commuter/trail + 29er hard tail
Second iteration: Cross/road bike + 29er hard tail with spare commuter wheelset
Striving towards: Cross/road bike + FS 29er (bugger it I'll ride with knobbies!)

Ideal number of bikes if I had no space issues and unlimited budget:
1. Cross/road bike type thing similar to what I have now but better spec'd.
2. 2. FS 26er AM MTB
3. Flat bar hybrid with rohloff 14sp and belt drive
4. Fat bike. Fatter the better.
5. Honda Fireblade CBR1000RR
