Just saw this on the news. Frank Schleck went over a barrier into a ravine in the Tour de Suisse at 60kmh, but only suffered some scratches and bruises. He thanks his lucky guardian angel medal given to him by his mother.
He may have lost the Tour of Switzerland, but should be fine for the Tour de France.
vid of the crash here
Frank Schleck a very lucky man

Ouch, that's a big drop!
Clearly he already had second thoughts about that corner, but why didn't he just go for a side slide instead? Instinct is a strange thing.

I think he misjudged the speed he was travelling at, and therefore didn't realise there was enough kinetic energy to flip him clear over the railing.
It's easy to do - every year you see motorcycle racers sliding across the tarmac and then trying to stand up before they've completely stopped. The resulting tumble at 30kph or less usually does much more damage than the initial 150kph slide.
Frank's a lucky man.

itsaghostcar thanks for the link.
I'd just been reading about it when I saw your post, it looked even worse than I imagined.
Incredible that he could get back on (another?) bike and finish the race.
Commentary was good too. Even though I couldn't understand it you could hear the concern in the voices.

I don't understand why he didn't make the corner. The bikes weren't leant over that much.
The other guy just seemed to lean the bike over a bit more and around he went. Seems to have been more of a crisis of confidence than having come into the corner too hot from what I could see on the vid.
Other opinions?

Think you're right, similar lines and speed and the other guy negotiates it fine.
