Not sure if these two stories did have done the rounds, both from the states:

The next day, operation "Take Back the Bike" swung into action. Accompanied by friends, Matheson cut away the locks with a buzzsaw and replaced the bike with a cardboard cut-out - complete with new lock.

As news of her daring dash spread online, police cautioned against confronting thieves but her actions continued to draw praise.
