Fulcrum 5 V Campy Zonda wheelset?

Postby andione1983 » Sun Sep 15, 2013 7:37 pm

anyone have experience with these two wheelsets, the zonda is 130 bucks more than the fulcrum 5... are they worth the extra for 100grams lighter?
are they that much of a better wheelset?

Do these wheelsets generally come with skewers?

thanks in advance
i am thinking of getting a set as spare for when my main set of wheels are out of action, like what happened this weekend

Zondas are a better grade of wheel than Fulcrum 5s, even if they do come out of the same factory.

Andy, the Fulcrum 5s are a good wheelset - I have a set as a spare and they roll exceptionally well.

The Zondas are the same level as the Fulcrum R3s (I believe) and I also have a set of R3s - they are slightly better rolling, but have a lower spoke count 16/21 R3, 18/21 Zonda vs 20/24 R5. The Zondas appear to be on sale online at present also.

The Fulcrum / Campy wheelsets are good value and sturdy wheels IMO.

cheers

In a fulcrum 5 set, you get skewers, manual, rim is taped, its properly true straight from the box, and you get a card signed by the guy who built it, ie fit the cassette and tires and go. It is however a semi aero wheelset, not a lightweight wheelset (it has reasonably thick braking surfaces etc, they are intended to last a while).

Fulcrum 5 have cartridge bearings.

Zonda have Record hub internals, Record freehub and Record skewers.

$130 for real hubs and skewers? Easy choice.

Ok just broke another spoke on my cheap stock Alex Rims, over it... after getting a new spoke and a straighten on Saturday $33.00... So what I want to know... If i buy the campy or fulcrum are they going to be a durable wheelset for bike track riding and a heavy guy like me at 98kg...If there are any other wheels please suggest but in don't really want to spend much more than 400$ for a pair and I don't want a really heavy set that would be heavier than my Alex rims / and a downgrade ... So an upgrade if you could say I'm assuming fulcrum and campy use better quality components than the Alex rims I have at present?
The Alex rims have just lasted on 1500klms or so... Is that crap? Should I bet longer? Should I take them back to the shop that straight them or to where I brought under warranty?

From reading above posts again I think the fulcrum 5 wheels set will be a good durable wheelset for my bike... It's not a top line race bike so as long as the wheels are durable I will be happy... So unless anyone states otherwise in the next few mins I'm about to place my order on wiggle

I thought the Zondas were on par with 3s...which I wouldn't consider a durable wheelset. details on another recent thread.

Nothing wrong with the R3s - I've ridden them on crap roads for over 3000Km at a weight well above 100Kg and they are fine. When I purchased them (Ebay) as a secondhand wheelset, they had been well used.

Awesome good to know... What cassette you running from what I read maybe I should ditch my Tiagra? And put an ultegra cassette on too.... I read that steel cassettes can dig into the freehub

It is not the steel cassettes "fault". The "fault" is in the light weight alloy (non steel) hub on the wheels.

How many k's do you have to put on wheels before they are considered durable? I'd say way more than 30,000, on a mixture of roads including really cr@p, and bombing down steep hills with some heavy braking.

Two spokes broken in 3 weeks on the 3s I was using a few weeks ago. They've got around 25,000 on them. I weigh 86kg.

Not on Campagnolo or Fulcrum wheels, as the freehub body for non Campagnolo cassettes is steel.

well I take it my Alex rims are fit for the bin? 2 spokes in 3 days with 1500 ks...? Or should I get it repaired one more time and keep using until it breaks again then throw the campys on

So i take that as yes I can put my Tiagra cassette on the campys and not worry about anything happening..

Veloce 11-25 cassette.

Ditch the Alexs. I've gone through several Alex rims (supposedly decent spec 36H ACE19) on my commuter through a mixture of cracking spoke holes, constant de-tensioning and spoke breakage.Fortunately I have a good relationship with my LBS and they sorted out the rebuilds and supplier hassling, until even they spat the dummy and went for Mavic A319s. No problems since.

actually looking at the tiagra 4600 cassette exploded diagram vs the 6700 ultegra cassette exploded diagram you will probably be better off with a tiagra cassette.

probably: assuming there are more contact points of the tiagra cluster with the freehub.
