A general question:
When buying a bike second-hand, but within the manufacturer's warranty period, would you expect the warranty to still apply? I'm particularly thinking of longer-term warranties like those offered on frames.
A more specific question:
Is there any legal requirement that a warranty applies to any and all owners, not only the person who purchased it originally?
One last question:
Do manufacturers actually ask for proof of identity when you make a warranty claim?

All the bike warranties I've seen are only for the original purchaser. But I'd think that depending on the specific circumstance, the company would do something about it at their discretion.

I very much doubt a manufacturer would even answer your phonecall if you where a secondhand buyer. When frames crack (and I am an expert on this) you don't really deal with the manufacturer or importer. You would go thru the bikeshop you bought it off.Unless you bought it through a friend who could then say they still owned it.

If you can get the original receipt from the first buyer I think you would be in a much better position. That would provide proof of the purchase date.toolonglegs wrote:I very much doubt a manufacturer would even answer your phonecall if you where a secondhand buyer. When frames crack (and I am an expert on this) you don't really deal with the manufacturer or importer. You would go thru the bikeshop you bought it off.Unless you bought it through a friend who could then say they still owned it.
See this page from the Australian Consumers Association. The relevant quote is:
So get the receipt and you should be OK. An explicit exclusion of warranty coverage for non-original purchasers could make your life a little trickier but you would still have statutory warranty coverage (as opposed to the express warranty you are thinking about).Even with second-hand goods, if the item is within the warranty period of the manufacturer you may be able to ask for a replacement or refund from the original retailer (although you may need the original purchase receipt).

Without that original receipt, it would be difficult to claim anything, even if he/she was the first owner.jasimon wrote:If you can get the original receipt from the first buyer I think you would be in a much better position. That would provide proof of the purchase date.

They cover themselves by saying warranty covers original buyer only. And as most reciepts for bikes have the buyers name on it you would have to be lucky to sqeeze it thru. There is an advantage of have a good friendship with a local bikeshop.I have got a lot of things thru warranty that shouldn't of been covered.
