Climbed a few meters today Jason. Settlement Road, Camp Mountain x 1.5, Nebo, part of Glorious and back through Everton Hills. Thought you'd be proud of my 103k/2.1k :P

It was a fun ride. Just being in the high country is pretty good too. I'm a pretty ordinary photographer and the phone camera is crap but look at that light!

My climbing has been a little under par of late so I am trying to get my climbing mojo back this week. Today''s effort -

nice ride SSS. I drove some of those roads last year. Had a big grin on my road when I thought about riding them

Hello All,

What do you think about iPhone & Android apps consistently reading ~30-40% more elevations than devices like Garmin?

Even so some Garmin units I find records 30-40% higher than other Garmin units, consistently over the same ride. So why can't two devices show the same reading, even if they differ, the tolerance should only be 5-10% at most, given they have the same electronic chips inside?

If I set a goal of 50,000m, from my tests, I'll get there 30-40% quicker with an iPhone than using my Garmin 500.

It doesn't really matter once you have uploaded to STRAVA they correct the elevation for you.

Don't forget too that no GPS, other them mil. spec. stuff, is accurate to less then 2-4 metres. Over a few km's of climbing that adds up to a fair bit of inaccuracy.

Depends on the device but you can force correction

Sort of. GPS elevation is pretty poor. Horizontal resolution is usually 5-25m for me but the errors seem to average rather than accumulate. Elevation changes on a dedicated device are generally barometric rather than through the GPS which means pretty good resolution but a slight lag and global drifting with changing weather. I believe most of the discrepancies between say an Edge 500 and corrected elevation are due to detail and what level of smoothing is employed. See also "coastline paradox".

I wouldn't necessarily take either too seriously but trust my Garmin a little more in general.

So you've only done one other hill? Better come on the BNA Group ride then so you can double that with Mt Alford and Mt French :P

Nearly double my effort for the year so far. I've just had the worst month for cycling in a while and have really got to get my act together.

52k metres of climbing after today's ride. So I'm on track for 150k for the year.
