Pretty trivial punishment really, but it's a good start that he at least will do jail-time.
Mandatory helmet law?

Minimum of 18 months for a traffic offence where no-one was killed is pretty huge actually and sends a really good message to the community that jail time is a real expectation for this sort of terrible driving. Any amount of jail time is pretty unpleasant, a minimum of more than a year is surprisingly good

Really ? It's 17 months since the offence, and some of the cyclists still can't get on a bike ... some will have disabilities for decades.
That's huge ... the sentence isn't, especially for someone as "educated" in dodging responsibility from prior offences.

I'll put money on Daddy stumping up the cash for an appeal --- it's not over yet.

Anyway, just gotta hope that he has one of these "momentary lapses" in the next few days in custody ... pretty sure Bubba will know how to
take advantage of them. If not how to cause one or two such opportunities.

Not suggesting it's perfect or equal to the damage to the injured cyclists, but given we regularly see community service and a fine for killing someone when you are driving, this is a distinctly stronger message

Some more details emerging from the SMH report Thomas Kerr Jailed for crashing into sydney cyclists
Kerr's lawyer had asked for him to be sentenced via an intensive corrections order (ICO), under which jail time is served in the community with supervision and conditions.
But Kerr was on an ICO for affray at the time of the crash and had significant moral culpability for the collision, Judge Knox said.
Just what sort of evidence and track record does it take before a judge will rule that it was a deliberate action ?

Incredible gall to seek an ICO when he's done this while on an ICO.

That would be attempted murder. You'd have to have evidence he intended to do it. Apart from admitting he intended to run them all down, hard to imagine what other evidence there could be.

Whatever the reason for this sad event, which only the bloke now in jail knows for sure, there are no winners.
