my project commuter/MTB bike - target 2011 Otway Odyssey.
objective - turf the useless Suntour forks that came with the bike (2004 Norco Bushpilot) and replace with something that can handle decent off-road riding.
result - disc brake + 9 speed conversion

Rock Shox Tora SL Coil Forks - Turnkey 2010 - $226
Avid Juicy 5 2009 - $87
FSA XC-180 XC Flat Bar - $27
Shimano Deore Cassette 9 Speed HG50 - $32
Hope Space Doctor Pack - $11
Shimano HG73 Chain 9 Speed - $20
TRUVATIV Team Stem - $15
FSA Orbit MX Headset - Black 1.1/8" - $42

Total - $459 + plus other stuff (cables, ferrules, etc.) - all courtesy c r c except headstem (T7)

Image

Image
i think i figured out what the whirring sound was

Image
steerer needs to be trimmed

Image
juicy 5s, deore rear lever and LX shifters a big improvement on stock Acera parts

Image
alex ACE17 rims and Deore LX hubs (only the front is fitted)

i'm pretty happy with the result, the forks feel sublime compared to the junk original-fit Suntours.

FYI special tools you would need for this are: headset remover tool, g-clamp with rubber pads to press headset bearing cups into head tube, chain breaker, bike cable cutter (don't use ordinary cutters, the cable will fray), cassette lockring remover, chain whip and a 25mm section of PVC pipe to knock the crown race into the fork steerer.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, but I would need a new front wheel ($150?) would make better to just buy a cheapy hard tail from cell :P

Looks good Jules, but I gotta tell yer...

All of those cup and hemispherical washers you got here are meant to be used during the installation to allow proper calliper alignment.

Pic from their site.

thanks Shaun - not much gets past you! the kit was first sent without those spacers. as you know, i ordered the spacer pack. believe it or not, the bolts that came with the spacer pack are too long, while the bolts that came with the original brake kit are too short. for the moment i have put it together with the short bolts, which won't allow the spacers to be fit behind the caliper.

i'm about to head off to my olds', where i have access to a vice that will allow me to hacksaw 10mm off the bolt length!

Very nice, but the picture fails to meet the Bike Gallery criteria of;

- against garage door
- drive side showing
- chain in big ring

Your handlebars need swivelling down.

Looks like you've done a glamour photo shoot on your bike - mood lighting, strategically placed helmet...

Those Oppys look great! I'd desperately love to get a C5/C6 later this year. Were the Mavic Aksiums no good?

I find them comfortable. Don't like them tilted forward too much as it makes holding on to the hoods while breaking more difficult. Isn't the rule of thumb that the ends of the drops should point towards the rear drop-out? (I'm taking "swivelling down" as meaning rotated clockwise in that photo; is that what you meant?)
BrisVegas wrote:Were the Mavic Aksiums no good?
They're ok, I think, as long as you don't weigh too much. Some people apparently have problems though with the rear wheel going out of true due to the non drive side spokes (which are normally at very low tension) loosening. These ones are lighter, more aero and didn't cost a huge amount of money, so I considered it worthwhile upgrading. The weight of the wheels makes a noticeable difference in acceleration.

Nice wheels. Did you swap stems or is that a medium frame? Makes the 120mm stem on the XL look enormously long!

I had to completely reconfigure the bars and shifters. My bars are rotated about the same, but I moved the shifters further down towards the bend. And now I've flipped the stem. Personal pref.

It's a large - 110mm stem, I believe. I've actually dropped the stem down 2cm (2 spacers) since taking that photo - seems comfortable.

Those Soul wheels look the goods too, what do you weigh and can I get a review after a few hundred kms please?

Shimano designed them to have the flat part of the hood to be level. Apparently Armstrong preferred to ride them tilted up (and who is Shimano to argue with LA) and the rest is history.

I prefer them slightly tilted up as well.

Hanz I hope you live right at the top of a really big hill...otherwise very disappointing...you know the gallery rules. :P

Do you ever have issues on the shifting to the big ring with 7900? Sometimes finding the chain jumps back to the small ring?
