Shimano parts compatibility question

Postby zaxatron » Fri Sep 22, 2017 6:49 pm

I have just joined the forum and am seeking some help and advice.

I am rebuilding my old Merida S3 bike and have the following parts:

Rear derailleur: Shimano RD-4601 GS
Front Derailleur: Shimano FD-4600 34.9mm clamp on

I pulled these parts out of another bicycle which was crashed in an accident in 2015 by a drunk driver, but the parts were intact except for me, the rider.

Now I discovered that the front derailleur will not fit on the seat tube of this bike frame because its diameter is 31.8mm, it is too big.

How can I fit this front derailleur? Can I get adapters for it or will the Shimano FD-4700 front derailleur 31.8mm clampon work with all my other 4600 series parts?

I also do have a Shimano FD-4503 31.8mm clamp front derailleur, but it is a 3 speed one. Can this be used with a 2 speed compact crank 50/34?

Thank you

Visit your LBS, they should have some shims to space the 34.9mm clamp down to 31.8mm.

You cannot use the 3-sp. FD with a two-ring crank; the shifting guides on the inner cage plate to not align with the chainrings, so you end up with poor shifting and a hell of a lot of noise.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
