Well, that ruined a good time

Postby gorilla monsoon » Sun Dec 03, 2017 11:11 pm

Headed out for a ride a few days ago, pulled-over about a kay into the ride to check something, set-off again and at about 5km/h ran over something long and thin, like a bolt.
It washed-out the front wheel to the left so I stuck out my right leg. Took my whole weight on my right leg in fact, felt something snap somewhere in the lower leg, felt a fiery pain smash into my skull and I screamed like a girl. I think there may even have been a tear or two and I really felt like I was going to throw-up.
I gave it five to get better then got back on. Funny thing, my right foot didn't feel like it wanted to work and was there only as a passenger so I rode another few kays and decided i should maybe call it all off and go back home.
I got up the first hill pedalling with one leg but the steeper second hill beat me so I dismounted and sort of hobbled up to my back gate.
The next morning my right leg was twice the thickness of the left one around the heel and ankle and there was pain all the way up to the buttock. I wasn't walking too well, even with a walking stick and it hurt like the bejeezus.
Went to my podiatrist (treating me for tendonitis, would you believe?) who said "ruptured Achilles tendon". She sent me to a physio who said "ruptured Achilles tendon", stuck my foot in a 'moon boot', gave me a pair of crutches and told me to get to the doctor.
Doc agreed with the other two and the upshot is that tomorrow I am having an MRI and on Tuesday I get to see the specialist. I hope he can attack me with a scalpel sooner, rather than later.
The good bits so far? My dear wife is really looking after me, as are a few of my mates. And I have a disabled parking permit. The bad bits? I can't ride, I can't drive, I have to sit down to take a shower, this bloody moon boot itches and it looks like we'll be cancelling our Christmas holiday in Southeast Asia.
The moral of this story? Try to avoid running over crap and don't upset the cycling gods.

Oh man that sucks!! And so close to the holiday season....but in times like these you've gotta try and convince yourself....it could've been worse....you could've stacked it in a very dangerous place or that you may not have been able to get home on your own and had to call an Ambo and no-one to look after your bike.....it ain't easy to tell the brain but it'll come around to that way of thinking eventually.
Shame about the holidays to Asia but it ain't going anywhere...just get better mate and give yourself time to heal.....hope at least you can sit down in front of the telly watching untold youtube flicks of bicycles and stuff while sipping on a few coldies...at least one arm can get a workout :P
Sorry to make light humour out of your dilemma but i was in a similar predicament early this year when i tore the meniscus cartledge behind my right knee.....thought it was the end of the world and nearly rolled down 2 flights of stairs in the process...can't remember when i last felt that much pain....so I was stuck in my recliner chair in front of the telly telling myself that well...I'm stuck here for a while.....may as well enjoy it.....lucky i had unlimited broadband....youtube was my sanity saver

Take care GM

Bugger. Have a trip to Vietnam coming up in April. Have been told by the boss that I am not riding the week before we go. Had a work colleague do a similar thing - out for a ride the day before they left and badly broke her wrist.

Hope it heals well

Thanks gents.
Yes, I've been through all that 'convincing myself' stuff and yes, it isn't a real problem. Just annoyed watching the wife pushing the lawn mower around on Saturday morning.
At least I work from home with my mind and hands as my tools of trade and they are working just fine so it's not like I'm losing time off work - except to see doctors and the like.

I agree, it's so much better being out on a ride while she mows the lawn. :D

Hope you get stitched back together very quickly and life returns to normal.

TV is terrible at the time of year, I broke my leg on this weekend some years ago and was told to sit down, shut up and watch the TV. While the wife was out I did sneak outside and ride my motorbike (the reason for the broken leg) around the property about three weeks after breaking it.

The Achilles didn't just rupture, apparently, it snapped.

I go in for repairs next week. Surgeon says he may have to graft tendon from my big toe to do the cut and shut properly.

Gunna be a quiet Christmas break. I hate cricket and don't much like yacht racing. I think Fetch (and my wallet) will get a workout.

The good news is I'll be driving by the end of January and back on the bikes by mid-February.

Dang! Sorry to hear about the injury.

Was the missus looking forward to the holiday or is she quietly relieved? That could have consequences...

GM that's no good - heal well .

Just in case you would like to enjoy the cricket (which I love) I'd be happy to watch some with you and "educate" you on all the suspense and skill that test cricket is - just don't make me watch the hit and giggle (50 over or t20).

Hope the surgery goes smoothly and it's not too hot in the moon boot before then (& after if required). hope your back riding soon.

Whoa, that was really bad luck, hope the recovery is quick after the surgery and you are back on the bike soon.
Makes you count your blessings tho, the number of times I've hit the ground at odd angles and speeds....

Gumby, we were both looking forward to the holiday and I think she may have been quietly annoyed, as was I! We'll try moving it over to Easter or a little later.

So, surgery last Thursday (a little bit involving, according to the doc), out of hospital Saturday and now just sitting on my butt watching a whole heap of recorded TV shows.

Thanks all for your well wishes. My goal now is to take part in the Postman's Run Charity Ride at Singleton in April.
