And yes, get caught using your mobile while driving should be an automatic licence suspension. Get caught second time and, once your (somewhat longer) suspension ends, back to being a P plater for you.

We - that includes the pollies - need to understand that a driver is in charge of some seriously dangerous machinery, and should regulate who gets to be a driver way harder than happens right now.

The crash that spawned this thread has progressed to court with the driver pleading guilty and indicating she was distracted by trying to get her phone Bluetooth to sync with her stereo.

The driver has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing in a couple of weeks (which indicates that it is likely she will be receiving a custodial sentence).

Even presuming a satisfactory sentence. Until the government shouts this loud and clear to the general public then nothing will change....

The public needs to know that mobile phone use kills, especially vulnerable road users. We need education campaigns in the same way as we approached speeding and drink driving.
