I have two currently but I think 4 would be ideal for me...

• Road bike
• MTB (currently own)
• (Road) Bike for the trainer
• Kid-toting/family/errand/beater bike (currently own)

Right now the kid-toting bike doubles as a trainer bike. I ride mostly on the road and have to admit I'm interested to see what I could do on a proper road bike. I'm guessing my annual km would increase for starters.

As for being forced to sell; as long as they are kept out of her way, I don't think it would ever be an issue, unless a particularly expensive bike was sitting unused for a long time. Even then it would probably be a stern request more than an absolute directive. The real battle for me would be acquiring N+1, rather than being forced to downsize to N-1, as far as SO is concerned.

I should add, wife has 1, Ms 5 has 1, Mr 3 has 2 (balance & pedals).

I had about 7 bikes peak. Track, Dually, hard tail, monstercross, road, commuter (drop), commuter (flat). Other half was ot happy with the amount of bicycling that was going on and since space was a premium every car trip to visit parents would result in a sort of bicycle exchange happening.

Anyway fast forward a few years and I got a garage of my own, reduced to 5 bicycles and stopped being as obsessive over bikes. Went back to cars as my hobby. Let's just say she is very supportive of my bicycle hobby. When I blew the engine an have the car in bits for months, she even said you could buy two bicycles for that!

For everyone else, yu simply say, it's cheaper than cocaine.

Started with 1 bike.
Got talked into riding to work.
Then started riding on weekends and got the N+1 bug - up to 4 at one stage.
Dropped back to 2 (1 drop roadie for weekends, 1 flat bar for commuting) for most of the past year, but just bought an as new condition bike at a second hand price (so sitting at 3). This bike is for the trainer, and I could be tempted to replace the commuter with a cyclocross bike (Canyon Inflite).

The missus is fine, I've lost 30kgs since I started the weekend riding.
I also say it's cheaper than spending money on cars.

Out interest, do your wives also have hobbies that consume money/storage space like cycling does for us? Other sports, jewellery, kitchen appliances, arts/craft etc?

My wife likes gardening (I really do not) so she has pot plants and a shade house consuming a large part of the backyard....where I'd cleared space for a second shed coincidentally....it's not the most expensive hobby but it takes up a large amount of outdoor space, but none indoors.

As long as I keep the spare room tidy and we can shut the door to hide the 7 bikes in there then she doesn't mind so much.

We also try and be fair with each other. She trusts I won't buy a $5000 race bike without discussing it first, and I trust she won't buy some rare and exotic plant that costs a small fortune either. We live simply and frugally most of the time, but if one of us lashes out and buys something expensive, we factor in that the other person can also spend the same amount, if we so choose. 1 x 1980's frame needs few more pieces

I want to add a mango velomobile to the collection Oh and I'm missing the fat bike element as well.
