Do you change wheels for wet/winter?

Postby Neddysmith » Thu Mar 08, 2018 11:48 am

Hey Guys,

After Riding most of last winter with my carbon clinchers with carbon i am thinking of getting another wheel set for this winter with with Alum braking surface. But if i do this i wil most likely change over the rims and brake pads at the start of winter and run those wheels till the weather fines up again, while the weather is still great now just thinking about it and gives me a couple of months to get a good set of wheels

So do you guys change wheel sets over for wet or winter riding or just run the same wheels all year round?

I'm old school. One set of sturdy basic aluminium clincher wheels for general riding and training, all terrains, all weather, all year ... and another pair of carbon tubular race wheels for racing.
I won't ask why people 1. Ride carbons daily or 2. Ride carbon clinchers as I don't want to start an argument. Lets just say that's not my style.

Every time someone says disc brakes, have a drink.

I change bikes for wet riding. My wet bike is worth less than a set of reasonable Al wheels.

I just have some alloy wheels I use a lot, they are good all purpose wheels. No disc brakes. Don't need them. SRAM Red brakes, Swisstop pads and the alloy wheels I have give me enormous stopping power in all conditions, and yes I have used them on very big descents in heavy rain.

I don't ride carbon clinchers, so it is no issue - Fulcrum R0 all year 'round and FFwD alum/carbon clinchers for racing....

You should probably have a more durable set of alloys regardless, for when you will be doing a rougher route.
So just get some.

You could also consider good wet grip and puncture resistance on their tyres so you have a solid set of commute and tour wheels available.

Or n + 1 (with disks)

I change wheels on my MTB. I have different tyres for different cinditions, and my main wheels are absolute beasts of things to change tyres on, so I just have different wheelsets with different tyres. :-)
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I'm with dmwill.

Years ago I bought a CX bike to use as a winter commuter (because I drink).
Then I went all out and got another road bike (because I drink).

Yep me also. Haven't raced in a serious race on "clinchers" since I was a Juvenile rider!

I change bikes when I'm "playing": tubs, bladed spokes, blingy bits etc. That only happens on dry weekends.

The rest of the time it's "the ute": full guards; racks; 36 spokes and 32mm tyres. :D

It’s a bit cheaper/easier to get extra wheels when you work in he business!

I tend to pick my bike for the weather rather than have diff wheels, although it’s less of a braking/grip decision now I have a disc brake (drink up) commuter/roadie and more of an easier-to-clean decision. I tend to go for the fixie in the wet.

Yes I would change the wheels or use as an excuse to N+1.

I ride my old rim braked Roubaix in the wet...and the disc Tarmac in the dry

Logic you ask? When it is really wet I tend not to ride too many hills or push luck on descents...

Around here we don't get a whole lot of rain. In winter -8C is about as extreme as it gets overnight. I don't need to ride in the wet or below zero and the bad season for punctures is Summer when the CatHeads are plentiful and dry. So I don't see any real need to change to winter wheels or tyres. Conti 4000s on alloy rims all year. Sometimes I may switch to thorn resistant tubes if the conti's are getting thin.

I change for a change, partly for the wind conditions rather than wet. If I have deep rims the crosswinds have a bigger impact.

Braking is not a concern, but I would like to upgrade to disc brakes (skoll).
