A bike for paths and casual use

Hello all

I'm after advice on buying a bike. It would mainly be used for riding on weekends and along bike paths. Rides like the paths along Parramatta River around Homebush with my family. Most rides would be 20km or less.

I've looked at a Giant cross city and other similar bikes. Looking for something light weight and around $500 second hand is fine.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
