Who can share an overview of the 2018 Indian Pacific Wheel Race?

I understand that there is no formal event so there is no support (or management). On the facebook, a rider Ben Haines has reported that he has pulled out after 3 close calls with road trains. I think the large vehicles are both not expecting bike riders but also appear not to be taking the appropriate caution in overtaking safely.

Leader about to hit SA border.

The road trains really can't and wont stop or drive on the dirt, if one is coming plus another vehicle then it is time to get 2m off the road into the dirt.
Got to be sensible and polite and yield in that situation. Even if they can give 1.5m clearance there is a lot of trailer to have a wiggle.

He did specifically mention close call with 2 roadtrains passing next to him and almost causing major incident.
Come on don't be crazy, it's not even a real race. You can see that alignment coming in advance and spend 30 seconds stretching off the road.

Not an ounce of sympathy for any of them.

Great to have the ride continuing this year. The leader this year is still a long way behind where last years leaders were at this point, not sure on conditions though.

Maybe some of the 'crazy' element is not in it this year, hopefully everyone is resting adequately.

Why in god's name is the linky (and map) to the dots styled as "Indian Pacific Wheel Race"? That's a really amateur oversight.

Good luck to them all tho.

Been following this years race quite closely, Abdullah is like 400km in front which is gun effort. I think though a lot of the riders are riding together (camping together) no note sure how many are here to race or simply just ride.

On another note a few of the OS riders are getting horrific sunburns. Probably didnt get the memo about our aussie sun

Noticed the same thing in the Tour Aotearoa in NZ, the amount of overseas riders I chatted to who had been badly burnt on the first few days, and 1 guy said he had been told but thought it was a local overreacting... he found out the hard way

Abdullah is at Clare and 360+km ahead of "Kiwi".

He might arrive in Adelaide at about 4.30pm.

There's a bloke who might be a stalker to take pics of riders sleeping in out back. :D

It's good that he don't wake them up.

The Dark Knight (Heath Ryan) is retracing Oppy's record setting route from 1937 from Perth to Sydney, he's going via the capital cities, but its a bit different to IPWR route.

Abdullah has opened up even more gap if anything, the stop in Melbourne hasn't slowed him down.
Others just taking it easier now?
