11-40 11 speed Rear cassette wobble

Postby zaxatron » Sat Jun 09, 2018 5:54 pm

Hi,

I have just replaced my 11-32 11 speed cassette with a Shimano Deore XT CS-M8000 11-40 11 speed cassette on my road bike.
To make this work I used a roadlink with a medium cage rear derailleur.

The cassette was mounted on a freehub 11 speed.

I installed my gear cable, adjusted the high/low screws, indexing and b tension.

The lockring on the cassette was torqued to 42nm.

But when I manually rock the cassette inward and outward it wobbles, as if it needs an extra spacer.

This is the video of the problem:

Please let me know what your thoughts are about this.

Thank you.

Best regards

There should be a 1.8mm spacer behind the cassette, as the MTB 11 speed cassettes are made to work on the same freehub width as 10 speed. Road 11 cassettes (except for 11-34 cassettes) use the full length of the 11 speed hub.

I've seen cassette wobble - luckily on a hub not attached to a laced wheel. I was checking out a Tiagra cassette i bought 2nd hand - and discovered why the previous owner sold it at a giveaway price. The rivet pins that hold the cogs together weren't exactly equal and so were butting up gainst the freehub budy end slightly unevenly. When the lockring tightened everything it forced the cassette into a slightly uneven plane - noticeable when you spun the freehub. If I had slotted it into a live bike it would have wobbled to the left & right of the derailleur sprocket.
