2018 Magpie thread

Postby tez001 » Wed Jul 11, 2018 8:13 pm

Just got a notification saying the magpie at Old Windsor Rd, Norwest is back.
Bit early I would have though?

Eek, that's a bit early. There is another one at the M7 service centre that is quite persistent - not in swooping but running after anyone it thinks might have food. I've never had anything suitable for it - but it is pretty good in its attempts.

While you lot are being swooped, I'll be enjoying riding far away from any magpies.

Same here. I don't think I've ever spotted a magpie in the Pyrénées (where I'll be for all of September). The large vultures, on the other hand, I think I'll keep my distance from...

There is one on the M7 cycleway near the management centre which is particularly persistent, it will chase anyone it thinks might have food.

Never seen that one before, unless its the one near the tip (which I thought was no longer there)

The Norwest Maggie had a pretty good go at me about an hour ago. I did not realise it was already magpie season, so the first swoop gave me a good fright. He is pretty committed. Despite me waving my arm over my head he was making contact, and kept going all the way to the lights.

first swoop of the year riding through Albion in Brisbane.

Is there anything we can do that will actually help not to get swooped?

Do cable ties actually do anything?

I am going to attempt to stick some eyes on the back of my helmet to see if that helps.

I ride out of Norwest BLVD towards Parramatta and I've been going to the M7 cyclepath rather than take on the maggie.

This afternoon saw a magpie on Salisbury Highway next to Kings Road absolutely cane multiple cyclists with >5 swoops apiece. One young lad was in tears.

Sitting in a park eating sandwiches the magpie came up to and took some bread out of hand, nice and friendly. Afterwards I got in my car, drove off and immediately got swooped by a magpie. While I can't confirm it was the same magpie, there was only 50 metres between feeding and being swooped :)

Got my 1st (actually about 7 or 8) swoop(s) on Henley Bch Road (Adelaide).

Was just near a mates house and had a front almost flat, so ambling along slowly.

Nasty lil bugger !!

My first swoop for the season, just before on way back from the gym. Big group of gum trees, same place/bird that's been there for several years. Started wearing my cable tie helmet after seeing they were starting via this thread. 2 hours on the roadie yesterday no problem. And yes cable ties work for me, don't care if I look like a dork. Maggies are bad, but butcher birds up here go straight for the eyes and are silent. Though I'd got hit by a falling bit of tree a while back, then realised it was a butcher bird. Particularly nasty one down near the beach I try to avoid.

Am back in Brissy after several months away.

Saturday I got hit repetitively by a bloody butcher bird in the back streets of Margate.
Thought it was a maggie due to how hard he was hitting me.

Sunday midday, a maggie hit me hard and repetitively on the inbound descent from Nundah shops to Toombul Shopping center on Sandgate Road, even while there was heavy traffic driving past.

Welcome back to Queensland!

You could put a scarf around your head, ears and wear a helmet with hundreds of cable ties. I saw that the other day.
