North there at Hexham isn't a route that I take very often, but on the few times I have ridden it I've found that the best option is just to cross at the pedestrian lights near the BP servo before the bridge, and then take the footpath across. The downside of course is that it puts you on the wrong side of the highway on the Northern side, so you have to ride up the breakdown lane on the wrong side for a little bit before you can cross back over.
