Depends:

Shimano 105, frightened.
Campagnolo Record, aroused.
SRAM, ambivalent.
Down-tube shifters, highly aroused.

If I can add an item to the list.....

Campagnolo Record properly set up - no reaction! I've got a Record group set on one of my bikes, and when I change gears it is barely audible.

Admin says, this thread is a bit concerning and readers should be aware that if they feel it is inappriopriate... report it. If there are reports, the thread will be removed.

The forums need to be welcoming and inclusive... I question whether motivations are apprpriate for this forum.

Plus one for me on this.

I used to work in a team of one other man and three women where we dealt with a lot of victims of street violence and domestic violence, as well as working mostly with perpetrators. In conversations with my female coworkers I was dismayed to find that everywhere they go they are hyper-vigilant to the possibility of unwelcomed approaches by men.

They were all highly skilled at their work and accustomed to dealing with aggression from clients. However, once out on the street it was an unpredictable world for them. My experience as a male is not like that. I walk relaxed, they walk tense and ready for something that might happen.

Recently while riding I dropped several gears at once on a shared path as I approached a female walker at a crest. My double-tap gears are not noisy but the rapid clicking as I moved from a low gear to high in the range for the steep downhill caused her to jump aside startled as I came close.

Many of the posts in this thread are comedic, but they fail to recognise that high levels of vigilance is the experience of many women.

I am 100% sure that nobody is aroused by clunky bicycle shifts.
Please recalibrate arouse-ometer because it's way off the mark.

Not needed as half have self censored and the other half retreated to their safe spaces.

I hear clicking behind me on a shared path, I'd respond same way, to some extent, even if my stare duration might be a little shorter..it would not be because I'm looking for a date with you..so don't pull over or even pointedly slow down if one day it's the actual me and the actual you..

Thanks DrShifty for adding your comments.

Perhaps as a practical tip for the original poster who is observing a reaction, ring the bell when approaching pedestrians because there is a higher chance of being recognised as a bike rider intending to pass.

I’ve experienced similar reactions as per Dr Shifty; also when freewheeling all of a sudden. In fact, I’ve used this to alert people that I’m behind them at times. To be honest, I’d never thought about a female reaction vs a male reaction before, but this anecdote along with more than a few discussions with my wife and other female members of the family bought about by the metoo type movements has forced me to open my eyes and reassess my perceptions. Along with most (many?) young fellas I’d always said “I wish I was a woman” with the obvious inferences. The older I get the more stupid I feel for having thought that way.

I suspect its simply that women are simply being much more vigilant to perceived danger, which unfortunately is something that they are very used to doing. So you probably aren't exuding an aura of attractiveness, rather an aura of menace or danger...
