Hi, my name is Ben and I recently started my HSC Design and technology course. One of the Ideas I have come up with was a smart bike lock which is fixed or manually secured to your bike. The way it would work is as follows. You lock the lock with a key or a combination code and it starts the lock, this means that if the bike is tampered with, the lock will notify you through SMS, activate real-time tracking through the GPS and will sound an onboard alarm to deter any thieves. This same thing would likely happen if the lock is broken.
I would absolutely love it if a few of you could give me some feedback and spare 2 minutes from your day to complete the survey linked down below!

Combo locks are problematic... and why use a key if you are already going electronic?
Rather than SMS, a notification would work through the app (which has phone permission to give alerts / sounds).
Cost will be an issue - with electronics you also need to charge (notification in app), but you can't get a cheap locking and pricy electronics. A U-Lock would make sense - already secure and versatile and would be 'enhanced' with your tech but means that the format doesn't change.
The key is optional (i.e. backup if charge fails)

So you lock needs a battery and a cellular connection. Sounds expensive.BenKerno wrote:You lock the lock with a key or a combination code and it starts the lock, this means that if the bike is tampered with, the lock will notify you through SMS, activate real-time tracking through the GPS and will sound an onboard alarm to deter any thieves. If you are going to use a GPS tracking on a bike why would you have it on the FIRST think a thief destroys and throws away?
Why not just use a regular 3G GPS tracker mounted, preferably hidden in the bike?

A bit of positive reenforcement (:-))
a) review what's been done before - and why they failed/succeeded
b) pick your market niche. Is this $20K carbon bikes or ebikes or commuters left in alleys?
c) know why your proposal is better/cheaper than the rest of the market. Or at least will be

Locate the gps tracking transmitter either in the seat tube or head tube rather than on the lock.
Look at the key system on japanese/dutch type bikes. They only lock the rear wheel from rotating, not recommending this. But the idea of the key staying with the lock/bike while unlocked is good. Key can only be removed when it has locked the bike.

have you taken 2mins to survey all the ideas you've recycled off Kickstarter?BenKerno wrote:Hi, my name is Ben and I recently started my HSC Design and technology course.
