Sydney to the Gong (not the MS ride)

Postby NathanC » Wed Jun 10, 2009 4:23 pm

If I start at Heathcote station and ride along the Princes, what is the best way to get to the North Gong suburbs like Corimal/Bulli/Woonoona? I guess Bulli pass isn't an option on the bike...

Don't know about Bulli pass, am thinking of doing it Xmas (we have friends at Thirroul). So if you do end up going that way, let us know how hair raising the ride down the pass was :D The other option is Stanwell (Pk??) from Helensburgh. I'm not sure of how to get on it from the F6 so maybe a goggle.maps could help with that part of the route.

The scenic way is to dive into RNP at Waterfall while the easier but less senic way is to go along Princes Hwy past Waterfall bridge for around 1km and turn onto old Princes Hwy towards Helensburg/Stanwell Top. With either route you'll stay along the coastal road all the way down to Wollongong. Whatever you do don't stay on the Princes Hwy. Not only there are quite a few large hills, the breakdown lane also disappears in many sections.

I'd stay clear of Bulli Pass. It's quite narrow in sections and pretty busy. There are some really steep pinches on it though, so it would be a cool climb.

As so good mentioned, if you stay on the highway, the descent into Wollongong offers no shoulder. You would be amongst it with a lot of trucks and other traffic.

I did the ride right through the RNP via Audley not too long ago, great scenery and some tough climbs! Went along the coastal road for the rest of the route, there is also shared cyclepath along the beaches as you approach wollongong too. Easy ride with not too many cars.
