Help with finding races in Sydney

Postby lth44 » Sun Jun 21, 2009 8:29 pm

Hi!

I am a New Zealand cyclist wanting to come to Sydney to do some racing. I am a 22 year old female and am of a reasonable level (I race with the national team) there isn't too much going on for female riding over here this season (the recession really sucks!), plus it was -2 degrees this morning where I am so I REALLY need to race elsewhere! I have family in Sydney so am trying to organise some races for August/September/October-maybe a 3 week block. I started out on the raod but now I am moving more towards track (I like tt, pursuits, crits-any hard fast flat(mainly) racing, so was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as to where to find races etc? Are there any track carnivals at this time?

I am pretty open to any suggestions or information. I figured the people who actually live there and race would know best what races are worth while.

Thanks,
Laura

August/September will still have you here for RAW Track. JinJie Gong from the Chinese national team made a few appearances last year whilst out here training under Sean Eadie

You can find road stuff here for open races, plus there will be plenty of club racing on.

October will be the beginning of daylight savings so you can race crits every afternoon in and around Sydney if you are keen

Laura,

If your relatives are in outer western sydney/blue mountains area...check out Penrith Panthers Cycling Club Races. A and B grade races would probably suit your fitness level. Some pros, ex pros and ex national champion riders are in the A grade so its a great way to test your level.

Schedule:

05/07/2009 Regatta Centre Road Race - 7.30am Sign On, 8.00am Start
19/07/2009 Regatta Centre - Time Trial- 7.30am Sign On, 8.00am Start -
02/08/2009 Regatta Centre Road Race - 7.30am Sign On, 8.00am Start
16/08/2009 Regatta Centre John Vedris Road Race - 7.30am Sign On, 8.00am Start
27/09/2009 Regatta Centre Road Race - 9.30am Sign On, 10.00am Start
19/10/2009 Monday night racing starts - 6pm Sign On, 6.30 Start

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Try the bicycle NSW Website. If you hold a license then you can enter open races through their website.
Yesterday was an easy day.

I second you doing RAW, there's some solid racing in there.

There is a tonne of club crits in Sydney which you can do, it really depends on where you will be staying, what suburb are you going to be staying in?
East
- Heffron Park
North
- Beaumont st
West
- Tennis Centre
- Dunk Grey
- Lansdowne
Further West
- Eastern Creek (raceway and dragway)
- Regatta Centre
- the L shaped one, forget the location name
South
- Oately Park
- Sutherland

Then there's road opens, combine a weekend away with a race, as mentioned previously, see the cycling NSW web site.

Track Training at
- Dunc Grey [night ?]
- Canterbury (Tempe) [Monday and Wednesday nights]
- Hurstville [Tuesday night]
- Lidcome [night ?]

Tonnes of group rides, really depends on where you are living.

This will make you laugh, I'm arranging an Australia vs New Zealand track race, based on the 3 riders in my club who originate from NZ, would love to add you to the team

My brother lives in central Sydney...just by Darling Harbour. Excuse my ignorance but not sure what part this is classed as? Where/what club would be closest for me to race? I forget Sydney is alot larger than the cities here!!!! What track does that mean I am closest to? :D

Try North Sydney (just over the harbour) or the east.

dulwich hill (DHBC) would be the closest club. Tempe and Dunc Gray the velodromes and Homebush (tennis centre) for crits. but being that central you are spoilt for choice

Yes Dulwich Hill would suit you just fine. We are one of the stronger track clubs, currently winning RAW. And I can use you in my NZ team, we just need to assess your track performance so we can match up an equivalent aussie, to give them a fleeting chance.

I'm going to throw up a post here: http://www.dhbc.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1197 to put the fear into the Green and Golds. Post Done LOL.

Are you in Auckland? if so expect to see you training every night out at Manaku (frig wots the spelling?). I've never seen Manaku, the track was at New Lynn in my Kiwi days.

Your location gives you good access to crits.

Keen to be involved in the Ausie V NZ thing you have going on so long as the dates work etc. always keen to kick some Ausie butt  hahah-probably not the smartest place to be posting a comment like that!!!! haha

Duneden? (ain't I crap at spelling). Timaru? Wot was the name of that place where I stopped for a pie? Is there a velodrome there ??? The photos of the Invercargill one looks pretty good. Tim Shabot.... when did he escape Auckland? Chatted with the Aussie DHBC team tonight, they are looking forward to racing you, we just need to determine who's the matched rider to your skill.

When do ya land in OZ ?
