Snake update - two red bellied black snakes spotted between the two bridges at Quakers Hill parkway.

They are out and about so stay alert and be safe out there.

Can you post the times that you see the snakes. I'm interested in when they are most active. ( guessing hottest times of the day...... 11 - 4pm? ).

Sure think these ones were at approx 5:30pm - they were enjoying the last sun of the day on the warm black pathway so they were not moving too quick and were near the bends in that section. Sorry for the slow reply as I haven't been on line for a while.

Hi Guys,

Snake alert: Almost ran over a red belly blake snake yesterday at around 3pm at the bottom of the hill before the Horsley Drive (heading towards Prestons). It was in the middle of the cycleway catching some afternoon sun - I was checking my cadence/speed and when I looked up it was right in front of my wheel trying to get away from me before it darted into the bushes. I thought it was just a stick until it started moving!

Yahhhh.............whenever I hear the frogs that live in those creeks beside the M7 then you can guess that snakes aren't too far away

We went for a night blat last week and saw a fox wandering southwards on the cycleway. Not far from Quakers Hill parkway zone of odour.

Rode the M7 yesterday and no snakes thankfully. Just the odd magpie swooping a few hundred metres before the chicken coop heading south. The greater danger was some gravel kicked onto the path (on a bend) by a Westlink service vehicle (on the left side of the path heading north on the underpass near Ash Rd).

The hills are not that steep. Maybe 5 or 6% max, and that only briefly.

The hill that rises to Elizabeth Drive reaches a little over 6%, and the climb to starts around
Cowpasture Rd (just south of the old Hoxton Park Airport site - so it rises for a few kms.

That won't challenge a fit rider, but newbies can find it hard. So too do cars -
the M7 car lane grade never gets more than 3% (the standard max grade
highway engineers design for). The cycleway has short sections exceeding this
where you've got to climb up the embankment rather than follow the cuttings provided for cars.

The northern half of the cycleway (from the M4 north 19 km) has much easier grades than the
19 km section south. Just choose which end suits your needs if grades are an issue for you.

My needs at the moment are long hills.

I am doing the Syd to Gong, and I feel quite underprepared, so I think a few laps of the M7, plus a couple around Leonay should help.

Get off the M7 Cycleway near the Equestrian Centre and ride up towards the radio tower then around and down the steep hill to the right (not straight), then back up it which should give you some good practice.

I rode over a snake last night around 8pm near the M4 exit. I went back to take a look and it slithered along the path and into the grass. It looked like a black snake around 2ft long.
The warm bitumen might attract them. So keep an eye out, even at night!!

Just got back from my first M7 ride - Started at LG, went to The M5, back up almost to Quakers Hill Parkway, then back to LG.

I have to say, it was a most enjoyable ride! The hill coming back up near Elizabeth Drive was a little tough, but on the whole, it was sensational!

I did the M7 for the first time today, from Merrylands along the Canal cycleway, past the reservoir at Prospect and along the Horsley Drive and out to Prestons.

My god, I couldn't believe the Maccas at Prestons - holy heck, all the cyclists there. I had a great ride, but suffered a bit of calf twitching near home on the right leg. I think it might have been a bit of dehydration at that point, I tried to stretch it out at bit and it seemed to work, but I'm still cautious.

By far the most enjoyable ride I've had, even if it was a bit hard work without any wheels to follow.

I imagine I saw some of you regulars - I did wave and generally try to keep out of the way of the supersonic traffic.

According to the sign, that limit is only for people riding their bike by standing up on it, facing backwards.
