Given where you live and assuming that is the speed you can ride at on your own, then you'll have no problems keeping up with these guys....

Eugene,

you may want to try Bunch Ride Finder to find a group near you.

Best option is to contact a bike shop near you and enquire whether they have a shop ride. Depending on the shop, they may allow you to join, although some shops require you to pay a membership fee.

An example of a shop that offers good rides (and free - although you do have to sign a disclaimer form) is Renegade Cycles, but they are based in Lane Cove so a bit of a distance for you to get to (you could drive there I suppose).

Most of the "standard" roadie rides around Sydney North are kind of hilly (eg. Bobbin Head, Galston Gorge etc.) - flat options are Centennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park and M7 cycleway. So it all depends on how good you are at climbing hills.
Weekdays: "Bliss" (Trek Madone 5.2 2012) | Weekends: "Cadel" (self built) | Casual: "Kitty" (Giant Cypress LDS 2009)

If you're new to town, I'd suggest avoiding the M7 on the basis that there's too much road debris etc. Homebush Bay (Olympic Park) and Centennial Park is the best place I think for a good ride. Explore the place yourself and it'd also be a great experience. I seriously shocked myself finding Newington Armoury.

thanks for the advice Christine.
found a couple of nearby shoprides, may try them out when my bike arrives.
still, it's a 13+km ride to the meetin point though.
Chuck, no idea where's the m7 yet.. and ya reading up on debris and all..
probably a few wks around the neighbourhood to get myself back to being active first?

SmellyTofu, where's newington armoury? and what, is it some weapons retail outlet or wat..

However there is an excellent dedicated cycleway running alongside ( but quite separate from) the M7. 40 km in length, a good 80 km workout or turn around at any point you feel like.

This is the closest starting point on the M7 from Cherrybrook (Cherrybrook to M7 - Google Map)

You can either ride to the M7, or drive and park nearby. It is an excellent facility, not many places where you can cycle 80km without any cars or traffic lights.

Not after these reports on the M7

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=17399&start=0&hilit=m7+safety

Newington Armoury is in Homebush Bay. I drive not far from Cherrybrook to Homebush Bay to ride there. Mostly dedicated path in a dedicated park and check out the stadium as well. Alternatively drive to North Ryde. Ride along Epping Rd on the bike path to almost all the way over the Harbour Bridge. I've done Epping to the city and back and that's a good 50km of flats and hills

But that's me. I like to take in the sights of the urban landscape and appreciating the beautiful city of Sydney than just pure riding.

just briefly run thru that warnings on m7.
can't think of any reasons why will anyone set up traps. sheesh.

thanks for the direction to m7 though Loosenutt. appreciate you mapping it out.
just to share this site, for those who have not heard of,
http://www.mapmyride.com

found that rather useful.

You will be fine in the M7 cycleway. We have maimed, dismembered and killed the kids that caused trouble including their parents. We have requested Centrelink to remove their benefits so that only food vouchers are given for the people concerned. The last body parts have been cleaned and the specimens are displayed at the Mt Druitt Hall of Delinquents.

Try it out...it won't hurt....maybe....

Human stupidity !

But don't let the safety warnings scare you off the M7 cycleway. All things considered, it's the safest place to cycle in Sydney - by a huge margin.

Next safest place are the various paths and roads around Sydney Olympic Park. The Armory is a part of SOP, near the Silverwater Bridge.

My riding sessions is erratic so it's difficult to say when I'll ride.

Hi Eugene,

Its been a long time since I went back to Sg. About years I think but welcome to Sydney. I am pretty new to Sydney as well but I have found a few nice riding spots about that are fairly free of traffic (Terry Hills West head road, around Windsor) Cherrybrook is not far off from where I live. Hope to see you around. I'm still exploring the area. Hope to see you around.

so, conclusion is that m7 is still way safer despite the possible traps and debris in place as cyclist are better protected from traffic.
alrite will try that out when i'm more familiar with this place.

silkishuge, baulkham hills is it, tat's jus a few clicks away?
well hope to see u ard too!

If you stick to the cycleway (as opposed to riding on the shoulder of the freeway), you shouldn't have any problems with debirs or the like riding along the M7.

It's a good ride end to end, not particularly hilly. Like others have said, there aren't many places where you can go for a decent ride and not have to worry about cars or traffic lights. Give it a go :)
