Ryans pics some it up perfectly.
Man that climb almost broke me. was getting twitches of cramps sitting - then stand to change position, cramps again, so sit back down cramps.. Mother F*(ker 39x27 going at 5km/h grinding up it. what a SOB. was so glad when we got to the top.

We'll make no mention of the 20 year age difference

Of course if Ehly or Don decide to load their rides onto Strava we wouldn't have a KOM left between us  :P

Sandy brought something to my attention re Garmin Upload. Maybe you guys already know about this, but there is a part that says "Elevation Corrections" once you've uploaded your ride. It has always been "disabled" on my uploads because I didn't know about it, I clicked "enabled" and the climbing for Saturday's ride went from around 4150mtrs to over 5000mtrs. I wonder how accurate this is ??

Anyway it looks good  :P

Chuck, Don, Ryan, Sandy and all Garmin experts, have a look at Don's Garmin elevation graph. For a there and back ride you would expect symmetry on the mid point. It's not  . Please explain oh learned ones. :(

Some GPS use barrametric pressure to measure altitude as a secondary measure and this sometimes changes the return reading. I'm pretty sure the 700 series Garmin do this.

I may be wrong Chucky, but my take on the "correction" feature is it follows the elevation of the road as per the maps/GPS details and therefore corrects for variations in the barimetric pressure which are only "approximate" altitudes based on air pressure (which change swith temperature. When you're riding on the road these corections are good, but on a cyclepath or mountain bike track they don't have the right referents to be accurate (i.e. the M7 cycleway climbs higher than the M7 motorway which is the altitude the road is rated at).

Hoepfully this is clear as mud - after a bottle of chardonnay it is to me

i forgot to mention i have developed a new device.
I have called it the "donman" (like a navman and garmin but much better imo   )
Here is the stats from the Jenolan ride

Image

Note: If you would like to order a "donman" just pm me and will give you my bank account details. Cost is $999.95. A bargain i belive at this price and so, so, so many features.

Sorry, but call me simple, main descent into Jenolan started at 3845 ft descend to 2138 ft and ascend to the same spot at 3403 ft. All within 2 hrs.
N.B. Barometric pressure was stable due it being virtually windstill. Say What ??? :? :? ? ?

Barometric pressure can change quite quickly and let's not forget the many thousands of metres of atmosphere above you Steve. If the air was cooling above it would raise pressure giving the device the data it is at a lower altitude. I'll research it and try and give a more detailed account but let's also remember that these cycling devices aren't a critical navigation device and wouldn't have the same accuracy as commercial navigation plotters.

So really what we're saying is these devices are suitable only as a very rough guide for elevation. Since they can't maintain accuracy within 10% on what would be considered absolutely ideal barometric conditions, unless cross referencing some other data.
