Commuting Pacific Highway between Wahroonga-Gordon

Hi, first time posting...
For the past year I've been regularly road cycling around the Hornsby/Ku Ring Gai suburban and national park areas for recreation and fitness. I'm hooked on cycling and want to commute to work in North Sydney so I can spend as little of my life on a train as possible.
What is putting me off is the seeming lack of bike friendly routes between Wahroonga and Gordon. I've cycled the Pacific hwy down to telegraph road a few times during non-peak hour (evenings and weekends) and it was OK, but still a bit dicey at times. I've also tried scouting out some quieter back roads, but end up too far up Mona Vale Rd, or getting funnelled back onto the highway.
I'm interested to hear other riders' experiences and recommendations... Eg. best times of day, how intolerant are the drivers, many close calls?
