M7 Cycleway Accident Tuesday

This morning, "Carl's Group" was coming back from Elizabeth Drive, and coming up Chicken Little Hill to Wallgrove Rd, in the middle of a usual hill climb sprint, Frank Coyle pulled his foot out, almost held it up but crashed. He narrowly missed sliding into a light pole.

We called triple 0 and an ambulance turned up. They neck braced him and took him to Westmead hospital.

Our thoughts are with him.

I rang after lunch and Frank was still in Emergency. Just got off the phone now, he is in a ward, and all they can say is "he is ok".

Update from Mike Sales, broken nose, cuts to face and arm, heavily sedated atm, scans to shoulders etc done but results not known. Will be in hosp overnight as a minimum. For those who don't know Frank he is a champion and at 75 years young leaves many younger riders in his wake . Hope he heals quick. Tim

Heard about a few incidents like this lately. Is there any particular pedal system that seems to be letting riders down at the moment?
Hope the poor bugger recovers quickly.

Can't remember what he has Womble, it's definately not speedplay, i think it's possibly look not %100 on that though.

all the best to him. anyone over 60 deserves respect for riding hard.
and a reminder to keep all your gear in tip top shape, esp if riding hard.
many riders wear their cleats down too far, and don't check cleat screws for tightness. these are screws definitely worth consideration of loctite.

Update as at evening of 27/11
Frank still has swelling at the front of his neck but no spinal breaks. As well as breaking his nose, he has also broken a small bone in his hand. He still has a cervical collar on and this is for 2 weeks. He may be going home tomorrow. Tim

Update, Just spoke to Frank, he has been discharged, and will undergo further tests down the track, but for now he will be resting and recuperating at home, with a neck brace. He remembers the accident, and the impact, and is grateful to the guys from Carl's group who visited him at Westmead. Now that we know Frank is ok, the condition of his beloved Colnago and Campy steed is currently unknown, but one of the lads picked it up from the M7 yards and took it home for safekeeping.Tim

I arranged for the M7 man to take the bike to their office and it was picked up from there. From memory handle bars beant, gear lever damaged, frame looked ok.

i think my speedplays caused a crash for me a while back.
long ride, standing up on the pedal to rearrange myself and foot came out. must have twisted foot around too much. As much as i love those pedals, at times the extra movt and wobble in them doesnt inspire confidence....

I've had this once or twice when I got out of the saddle. Caught it each time OK but kinda scary too. Keep thinking of the chain ring tattoo on the side of the leg

i keep thinking of the grazes on my left leg, and the bruise on my right thigh where it cracked the top tube as i came down on it. and the $300 repair job....
