Pyrmont Bridge fruit & vegetable garden

Postby find_bruce » Thu Jul 31, 2014 7:39 pm

I kid you not. The latest imbecillic idea for Pyrmont Bridge is to turn it into a fruit & vegetable garden. It is so daft, that even Arold screwloose things it's dumb

Poor old 'Arold just couldn't resist a dig could he

Mind you, solid walls of vegetation could be a benefit. Make them full length with bikes up the middle and peds on the edges. To cater for the touristy types, install gated pedestrian activated crossings every 100-150m. Pedestrian hits button, lights in tunnel go red and gates swing, blocking bike movement temporarily.

Then no doubt, Arold will make it his civic duty to walk up and down on the bridge all day pressing buttons as he passes while he drafts up a "Retake Pyrmont Bridge" flier seeking thousands of fellow loons to block the tunnel for their own safety...
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

rode home on wednesday and was thinking how much better the bridge flowed now the monorail disassembly has finished. Obviously someone at the SHFA thought the same thing and decided to do something about it

Based on the available reports, I can't understand how it would work. The proponents need to explain in more detail.

There is a petition at http://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/c ... the-bridge.

And there is a DA before Sydney Council http://development.cityofsydney.nsw.gov ... pk=1159342 from SHFA, can put in opposition subs until 2/9/2014. However SHFA is holding the launch on the same day, so they must be confident!

Did anyone watch utopia (ABC) last night? The pyrmont vege patch smells a lot like the episode from last night

they’ll have real problems in working out how pedestrians are going to cross the dedicated path,’’ Mr Scruby said.

I think he means real problems in the manner of looking left and right and crossing when it is clear, right?

No dedicated path in latest proposal, remaining space would be shared zone. SHFA is in someone's sights, according to another article in the SMH yesterday, so maybe they will be axed before this boondoggle gets plonked on the bridge.

We live in a weird and wacky world when Duncan Gay agrees with Clover Moore and against one of his ministerial colleagues.

Just goes to show that even though Mr Gay's decisions appear to be made randomly, sometimes the chocolate wheel stops on the correct answer.
Plans for a fruit and vegetable garden in the centre of Pyrmont Bridge appear to be withering on the vine.

Dubbed Amaze, the 180-metre project drew the ire of pedestrians and cyclists concerned it would worsen congestion issues on the bridge linking the CBD and Pyrmont, and ridicule from the Roads Minister, Duncan Gay, who mistook it for a proposal by the Greens.

"We live in a weird and wacky world when the Greens suddenly decide that a bridge should not be a bridge but should be a garden area," Mr Gay told Parliament this month.

But the proposal, which would take up a third of the bridge's width, was actually being advanced by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and Planning Minister Pru Goward.

A spokesman for Ms Goward declined to comment on Tuesday when asked directly if the project would go ahead.

The "world-first experiment in environmentally sustainable design", announced in July, was due to be installed on the busy thoroughfare in October.

The spokesman appeared to blame the City of Sydney for delaying the project.

"The Minister is disappointed the City of Sydney has held up approval of the project, at the expense of the pedestrians and tourists who could enjoy the installation, and the businesses in Darling Harbour who rely on outdoor activities such as this to drive customers through their doors," he said.

A City of Sydney spokesman, however, said the council was merely following the normal practice of project approval.

"City staff met with SHFA staff to discuss the application and SHFA agreed to make extensive moderations to their original proposal," the spokesman said.

"Pyrmont Bridge is a major pedestrian and cyclist thoroughfare, with 17,000 people accessing the bridge each day."

Opportunity to place the garden down the middle of Pyrmont Bridge arose after the state government began removing the monorail last year.
