Le Tour in NSW 2016 - L'Etape Australia

Postby SheikYerbouti » Thu Jul 09, 2015 10:36 am

The New South Wales government has today announced the first Tour de France event ever to be held in Australia, and you could be riding your bike in it, competing for the jersey of your dreams.

The route design, crafted to replicate the infamous mountain stages at the Tour de France, is endorsed by Le Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme, who said: “We know that Australians love the Tour de France and thanks to SBS it has entered into homes Down Under for 25 years now.

“It is a pleasure to bring the Tour de France universe and flavour to Australia, giving thousands of people an experience similar to that of the Tour riders.”

Riders will compete for the legendary Tour de France yellow, green, polka dot and white jerseys, with up to 10,000 amateur cyclists invited to race across three levels of participation.

The Race, the flagship competitive ride with significant mountainous terrain operated under professional race conditions, will replicate a stage of the Tour de France. The Ride is a slightly shorter route for seasoned riders, while The Ramble is an easier course accessible to riders of all abilities.

More information on L’Etape Australia 2016, including the race route, entry details and Pro Mentors will be announced in the coming months.

Thanks SY, looks very interesting.

I have thought for some time that BN must be desperately trying to get a Peaks event up in NSW (now they have them in Vic, Tas and Qld).

So, I trust the organisers of this event have spoken to the NSW Police, who apparently take a dim view of any organised cycling event which might inconvenience a car.

It's not April the 1st is it?

Seriously though, I really hope this gets up.

Hopefully there isn't a disclaimer that says "Subject to NSW police approvals". You know how they get during December with the whole double demerits thing, so it will be interesting. I may have to save my money for the 2017 Haute Route though

Interesting, but given NSW gov involvement and their absolute hatred of anyone on bicycles, I'm inclined to think it is a grand hoax.

Perhaps it is a diversion away from their holy war against inner city cycling lanes. I'd believe it when I see it.

It's in the Snowy Mountains so the police might not care about road closures so far from Sydney and they're probably happy to earn the exorbitant fees to provide traffic control. Be prepared for a very steep rider entry fee.

Don't believe it, the NSW Police command in the area is extremely anti cycling. They have been trying very hard to kill of the Hartley charity ride for the last couple of years and are nearly there. Their basic tactic is to just keep adding complications and additional controls on the organiser's so that they just give up.

I added my name too. I wonder how many names they will end up with. It will surely be capped.

Looking at what they do overseas, it's more likely to be a testing 160 km ride rather than an epic 200km+ endurance effort like the Peaks rides.
