What are some cool downhill decents in NSW?
Postby thomas1987 » Sun Sep 18, 2016 4:18 pm
My favourites:
In Kangaroo Valley, there is Tallowa Dam road which has a pretty epic decent into Tallowa Dam.
Another one is Avon Dam Road in Bargo, such a nice quiet hill leading up to Avon Dam with little to no traffic at all.

Yet to try this. Heard there are lots of traffic. What is the best time to go? Weekends in the early morning?Derny Driver wrote:My favourite is Macquarie Pass.
Never heard of this place but doing an image search the place looks pretty cool. Too bad it's so far away from Sydney.Farmer Elvis wrote:Warrumbungles

Yes, weekends best. The traffic is not too bad. Wait at the hairpin for a good break between cars or you will get held up on the bottom half of the descent. A bike will outpace a car down there quite easily.thomas1987 wrote:Yet to try this. Heard there are lots of traffic. What is the best time to go? Not steep for the most part but a load of fun. 1,100m drop or thereabouts
Victoria Pass is fun also and I would second Megalong Valley- a good grind back up also.

For example on the jindy to charlottes road there are a few, but from rennix gap to thredbo river is one long descent on a nice smooth road which is well maintained and has no cats eyes because of snow ploughs. On the guthega road from the start of the road to island bend. Kalkite road. "Beloka" on the road from jindy to Dalgety, very steep, quite a challenge to go up it. Snowy mountains highway down into talbingo. There are loads more around. The roads are very quite outside of winter, especially in early mornings, but always a bit of wildlife around

Just widening a few narrow sections at the top, and fixing the hairpin that the buses get stuck trying to get around. Been working on it for months now. The changes are very minor.Jawa wrote:I hear Macquarie Pass is going to be "upgraded" ... which how I read as ruinedmikesbytes wrote:Agree on that one, I've done it 3 times, twice was on a fixie [ouch]Derny Driver wrote:My favourite is Macquarie Pass.

I've heard a few people do Mount Ousley (up and down) very early on New years day? Next to no traffic/trucks etc.wellington_street wrote:Mount Ousley Road?
For me, Macquarie pass, Cambewarra Mounain (prefer the south side. North side is OK, but more susceptible to wet mossy patches in some of the corners ), Barrengerry.

Thanks for this suggestion. I tried it last weekend, such a beautiful scenic ride surrounded by lush green rainforest on both side of the road. The climb back up wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I will be going back there again for sure.Jawa wrote:I'd like to try Megalong Rd from Blackheath down into the the valley.

Was tempted to ride back up at the end of 180kms for the day just to do it again.

If you have a mountain bike or like some gravel then the dirt road from Mt Irvine to Bilpin (Bowens Creek Rd) is basically closed to traffic.

Did that one going the other way on my CAAD10. It was horrendous . The bridge was pretty much rotted through too. (September 2012)wellington_street wrote:Another option is Mt Wilson Rd from Mt Wilson to Bells Line of Road - early morning before the weekend day-trippers find the road.
