Hazard reduction burn gone wrong

Postby biker jk » Sat Oct 15, 2016 6:40 pm

Today's hazard reduction burn in Mt Ku-ring-gai appears to have gone wrong. We rode past it today and it was already on the Old Pacific Hwy and subsequently crossed the road and threatened the railway line. Lucky we made it through in time otherwise it would have been back to Berowra and returning via Galston Gorge.

A lot of smoke haze at the start of the annual Spring Cycle. Once we left the CBD it was pretty much gone. I think it was pretty much a hazard reduction weekend, as I recall other areas such as Menai were having hazard reduction as well.

Hazard reduction burns are always planned.

For NSW planned burns
http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-informat ... reductions

But like all plans .. they can go wrong
The one at Mt Ku-ring-gai did go a little wrong. The fires use roads as barriers .. they plan on the road containing the fire .. jumping the road is not on a plan.

Yes I heard there was backburning at Holsworthy. It had cleared by midday where I live.

It was the first thing I smelled when I got off the plane yesterday morning.

I heard from a mate later yesterday that it has seriously impacted a number of mountain bike trails around Terrey Hills and St Ives.

On the other hand, it might be time to pull out the fire rake from the garage and design some new trails. At least the ticks will have been dealt with for awhile.
