Gong Ride

Postby AndrewCowley » Sun Oct 28, 2018 10:55 pm

I’m doing the Gong ride on Sunday and will be riding to the start location from north of the bridge. Once over the bridge, what’s the best route to take? It’s not a part of Sydney that I know well. Thanks in advance.

I'd go Kent St, hang a right onto George St if you can at the corner of Sussex and George (otherwise maybe Sussex St and Castlereagh St via cycleways to get toward Belmore Park). Then Regent St, Botany Rd, Henderson Rd, Mitchell Rd, Sydney Park Rd, then the highway to Tempe. Hope this makes sense.

Traffic will be real low at 6am, probably wouldn't bother with the Kent St cycleway until the contra-flow bits where the traffic is northbound only.

Thanks for that. It looks more straightforward to take the Princes Highway instead of all those other streets. I assume that would be ok early in the morning?

Andrew, I live off the Princess Hwy at Tempe and the traffic will be low combined with 3 lanes each way plus there will be other cyclists. A sports rider like you shouldn't be concerned

If your eager to avoid the road then you have two alternatives;
1. Bourke st cycleway then after cutting a few streets, take Airport drive cycleway
2. Unwins Bridge rd
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

Broadway then Princes Highway was an option. I like the other way, just nicer 8)

I rode last year - our group met up in Artarmon.
After crossing the bridge, we travelled down Sussex St through Chinatown, then onto Broadway and then City Rd/King St. You will probably see a stream of migrating cyclists at that time.
Enjoy the ride on Sunday - the best part for me was the national park, the worst part was the constant dodging of unpredictable blue-moon cyclists.

Hope everyone stayed upright and had a good day. Didn't see any stacks myself, although I had to wait at Waterfall for about ten minutes for a couple of riders to be extracted from the RNP. Also heard of a woman at the start who fell over and broke her arm before she even got going.

Well if you enjoyed the ride to Wollongong then a ride to Newcastle on Saturday 17 November will be twice as enjoyable, twice+ the distance (174 km), far less cost ($16 incl insurance or $6 for CA & Audax members), two supported stops (Mt White at 60 & Budgewoi at 120) and the best bit is that it is overnight (starting 2100) with a dawn / post dawn finish at Newcastle Ocean Baths for a early morning swim, check it out.
