The Rainforest Ride – November 21, Great Otway National park
Postby Primo » Mon Aug 10, 2009 1:40 am
Just notifying you of a charity ride coming up in November..
Support The Burnet Institute’s fight against The ‘Big Three’: HIV, TB (Tuberculosis) and malaria by taking part in a spectacular road-ride through the Great Otway National Park. Choose between 4 different rides, ranging from the challenging 140km Rainforest Circuit – for the more gamely rider, right down to the magical 23km Glow Worm Twilight Ride - perfect for a family outing – all with stunning scenery.
This event is being conducted for a wonderful cause, and all participants are encouraged to raise funds for the Burnet Institute to help us fight the world's worst infectious diseases: HIV, TB and malaria - The Big Three.
Details:
Saturday 21 November 2009
8:00 am onwards.
Apollo Bay, Victoria
Even if you are unable to ride on the day, we are always after some extra pairs of hands to help the day run smoothly!
To register as a rider or volunteer, or if you are after more information on the event and Burnet’s cause, go to www.rainforestride.com

So which ride are you planning to do?Missy24 wrote:I'm in... I LOVE the Otways!
I think I might do the 70km - or it might end up being one of the 23km ones if a few family members want to come...

How do ACf members identity each other on the ride?
Do we use a black market to draw a star on our "event" jerseys?
I'd be game just to meet a few people on the way.

Do it! Go on! I dare you! 140km... probably I'll die in the process, oh well...kibnedyo wrote:Looking seriously at the 140klm ride but haven't booked yet.

The 140km starts at 8am in the morning, which isn't to early, you could totally have a RV point with the riders who are going... coffee anyone?

Much more confident about making full distance . Did Ballarat-Skipton rail trail Sunday 65klms from home on the MTB and had plenty to spare energy and comfort wise. Was impressed with the variety of the scenery and wildlife. I was the only rider all day, hopefully summer brings on more users. At one point was riding alongside a big grey kangaroo surprised to have his peace stolen. 35kmh looking eye to eye with a big marsupial is an awesome experience. Luckily he chose top peel off away from me without the tail making contact. Close up, the shoulder muscles on that beast were huge, even a life saver would be proud to own such a set.
Riding hills around town and building up climbing ability. It is that climb out of town that scares the daylights out of me . Usually if I get through the first of the day I survive but the thought of that climb so early in the day is daunting.

Doing the 140klm. Not sure of outfit for ride, but definatley not monkey suit or any other outlandish costume as wife thinks I'm mad enough as it is .
We had a little problem with accomodation. Cottage just outside of town took our booking, then accepted another and gave preference to them. Claims it is a problem with her computer system as it doesn't show a booking till the deposit is received. I suspect it is more likely we was gazumped and she is charging more 'cos of higher demand due to the ride.
Last laugh on her is we got cheaper accomodation in town for two families and pets allowed. The dogs love the beach! The shorter ride home will be appreciated too.
Anyone else got their numbers?

The part of the forecast I don't like is for Thunderstorms, although I believe the weather pattern will be as strong as first feared.

Just received a second participant number for the Rainforest Ride. Had to call the organisers to ensure which was the correct number. The one sent out a month ago had no record with the event organisers.
It may be wise to check your own entry so you have correct number on the day.

How lucky were we with the weather for this ride !!! Forecast for storms but only a few drops on the starting line... Drove home in the downpour this morning - probably would have stayed in our hotel room if it had rained like this for the ride yesterday.
Thought it was a good event overall... did the 140km circuit but opted out on the 2 side trips, making it just over 100km all up.
How did everyone else enjoy the hills?

Completed the 105Km loop, had to be back in Melbourne for work by 5pm.
The climb at 88Km - 91km was definitely the most challenging, goal to keep the speedo above double digits.
A little sore today, but feeling better after a recovery spin.
