Hi all,
I've been in warrnambool for the last week and doing some training rides around the area but can't seem to get a straight answer about the port fairy-warnnambool rail trail? is it finished or what's the story? Can anyone suggests some good routes to port fairy return?
Cheers,
Jason

This 37km rail trail from the Moyne River in Port Fairy through Koroit to Warrnambool is currently under construction. The first 23.5km from Port Fairy to Illowa is completed and rideable. This section includes tunnel access under the highway. The section from Illowa to Levy's Point is under construction and is planned to be completed by the middle of 2011. This uncompleted section is across Kelly's Swamp.
The 6.5 section from Levy's Point to Warrnambool is completed. Thus 30km of the 37km is completed.

We rode the section from Dennington to Illowa last April. It was not so nice, especially with some wind.
The Princes Hwy has been re-routed to follow the old rail line alignment and the 'rail trail' here is the old highway and climbs a long, steepish open hill
The section from Koroit to Port Fairy would have been helpful for our tour (although there are some nice historic buildings we saw along the roads)
As for other routes - ride out of Port Fairy along Griffith St and contiue along Belfast Lough. At the Princes Hwy, turn right for a short ditance (love the tiny Irish cottage behind the hedge on the left) then turn left onto Koroit-Port Fairy Rd. Through Koroit, take the road south back up around Tower Hill. Enjoy the crater views - the lake might even have some water in it now after all the rain Either take the Princes Hwy back into Warrnambool or take Woodford Rd through Yangery to Woodford and the Hopkins Hwy into town.
