Amy's Ride Geelong 2012
Postby snark » Sun Jan 01, 2012 5:15 pm
I'd signed up for the 120, but with a 41C forecast and icky 35km/h northerly winds for the home stretch, I'm thinking about switching to the 70 km ride. That said, today was meant to be hot but didn't quite get there...
Cheers,
Simon.

Just spoke to my mate who signed up at the same time, and he is still keen for the full ride, dependent on the wind/temp.
I will be out there on the course with bib #975, so feel free to say g'day.
My avatar is a photo of my leg, so that's probably the easier way to spot me.
Would be good to place a few faces to the names.
Cheers,
John.

Everyone else (i.e 25-29km/hr group and slower) is now being asked to ride the 70km route to avoid spending over 4 hours in the predicted 42deg heat.

The winds weren't as bad as I feared. I was expecting the last section along Horseshoe Bend Rd to be pretty horrible, but wasn't too unpleasant at all.
The highlight was saying G'day to Phil Ligget at the Barwon Heads aid station!
Cheers,
Simon.

Had the wife drop me off, set up my bike and just about to pedal off to the start area, and the first person I notice is bib 281, so said a quick g'day to Simon.
Once I set off on the ride I felt good, and sat at a comfortable pace with my mate on the 70km journey.
We stopped at both stations for fluid top ups and all was good until I headed off from the Torquay aid station and into the headwind.
I think that the lengthy stop for a drink, refill and a chat allowed the wind to pick up a bit.
From there I struggled my way to the finish, with a couple of shade stops required to get through to the end.
Just downloaded the info from my Garmin, and it has the max temp as 44deg, with an average of 34.4
I know it was hot, but how does that compare to the info from anyone else's

Even though it was nice saying G'day to you, I'm glad I didn't ride in the middle of your little heat bubble .
Cheers,
Simon (awake now because I had a very good snooze this afternoon...).

Me and my mate who I was riding along with made the same comment on the surf conditions along 13th. Probably helps explain all the cars trying to find parks along there too.MattyP wrote: Surf was fantastic at 13th!

As per the comments on the organisiation of the event, the volunteers done a pretty good job, especially in the heat.
