Looking for a different thing to do tomorrow... Anyone can suggest a safe route from Ringwood to Box Hill?

Welcome if anyone wants to ride together as well...

When I head out that way; starting from Heatherdale Station follow the railway line then follow Cochrane - Cook - Burnett - Doncaster East - Mitcham Rd - then straight down Springfield Rd

Hi Ken.. Thanks for that. I will try next weekend..

Do you know what sort of surface the trail has? Concrete, bitumen, or dirt?

What KenGS is describing is a collection of residential streets and roads - all sealed surfaces. They are generally very safe to ride. The main road - Springfield Rd - has bike lanes for most (all?) of its length.

Your other option is to ride the Mullum/Koonung Trail alongside the Eastern Freeway. This will take you a fair bit to the north and you'll need to ride 3-4 kms south on Station Street to get to Box Hill. The trail is all concrete or bitumen I think.

The Mullum and Koonung trails are mostly bitumen. Between Ringwood and Mitcham Rd be careful in the wet as the bridges are wooden and get very slippery. Also, if you are on skinny road tyres be careful of even some of the bitumen in that section as leaf litter also gets very slippery when its wet. In general I don't think of the trail as very safe for those reasons and a few other surprises (blind corners, metal plates etc) which is why I prefer the on-road route if I'm on my road bike.
