Melbourne to Geelong and Anglesea

Am going to ride to Anglesea on the 28th for the first time in over a decade. The last time I did it I just rode straight down the Geelong Rd/Princess Freeway, through the middle of Geelong and down the Anglesea Rd.

This time I'm looking for a quieter route, and the options are
a) Federation trail to beyond Werribee, then onto the Old Melbourne Rd to Lara
b) Through Williamstown/Altona and then onto the Old Melbourne Rd.

Approaching Geelong I'll probably turn left early and ride past the refineries and the Esplanade into the CBD. From there I'll either take
a) Surf Coast Hwy
b) Horseshoe Bend Rd
to Torquay, or
c) Ceres to Hendy Main Rd to Moriac and then straight to Anglesea.

Thoughts/suggestions welcome

If you can stay upright on the bike trail then I'd take option a) to Geelong and option c) to Anglesea.

Once you get to the end of the Old Melbourne Road at Lara take Mc Clelland Ave and turn left at the roundabout onto Rennie St. which sneaks along the new freeway and down onto Sheel Pd. the Corio refinery area. I'd stick to the waterside on the Esplanade until you get spat out onto the Melbourne Road. Ride the short section of Melbourne Rd (Latrobe Terrace) and turn back onto the Espie via Bell Parade. Then turn down Mercer Street and into Geelong CBD. Turn right into Ryrie St and cross over onto Aberdeen St. Turn left at Pako Street then one block and turn right onto Aphrasia. Ride right up Aphrasia which runs onto Queens Park Road which in turn runs onto Scenic Road then drop down the hill after the water basins and turn right into Barabool Road which takes you up to Ceres and beyond to Hendy Main........

The Surfcoast Hwy (Torquay Road) is nut bar central this time of year and although Horseshoe bend road circuit is nice and quiet, once to get to Ocean Grove / Torquay the Christmas holiday traffic is insane. I'd avoid riding on the Ocean Road as much as possible at this time of year so popping out onto the GOR out of Forest Road via Moriac is your best bet IMHO.

Well I ended up driving to Anglesea and riding around the coast. I did one loop from Anglesea - Torquay- Moriac - Anglesea, and I took Horseshoe Bend Rd. Nice road, thanks for the suggestion.

I must say that all the surf coast drivers were very considerate and pleasant.
