Not long to go now. What facilities are there down at Queenscliff for refueling? Is there an official ATBIAD feeding station there or is does the local economy get a boost for the day due to the influx of ferry waiting cyclists?

Both. As pointed out above, thats where you get your lunch (assuming you are doing anticlockwise, otherwise its Sorrento).

We've entered the 210 anti-clockwise and specified 20-24km/hr as average speed (I hope we will be somewhat faster) - and have been assigned to start group 4. I know the first wave leaves at 6am but any idea what our start time might be (based on previous years or any info that might be in the rider pack that I haven't yet received)?

Takes a while, Joe. You're released in dribs and drabs anyway because of the traffic lights ahead.

Water.

You can buy food at any local shop/cafe, and lunch is provided. Other than that you'll need to take your own food.

Are you talking about supplies in general or as part of the lunch pack? Not sure about the former, but last year the lunch included sandwich, banana, gel shot and bottle of powerade. There were also promo people handing out sachets of honey shots.

For me, I only actually carried two bananas and about half a Woolies home brand fruit cake which I'd cut into slices (big fan of the fruit cake as a sugar hit). I carried two water bottles but left one empty except for a scoop of powdered Gatorade in the bottom - then just topped up at the water stops along the way. Probably need to remove my airzound though as it currently takes up one of the bottle racks. Surely I won't need the AZ???

Last year the only one I stopped at (other than at Sorrento for lunch) was in Dromana and they had a huge table filled with bananas they were handing out. Not sure about the others as I didn't stop (though I rode with a backpack and took WAY TOO MUCH food with me). NEVER again
I ended up going home with 80% of it.

If you're homebound leg is Sorrento - Melb then there are alot of shops you will be able to stop at along the way, so it will be far easier to carry some money and just buy anything you need along the way back to Melb (and just take some food for the outbound leg towards Geelong).
If you're going the other way (Geelong - Melb), there's probably not too many places along the freeway to stop (other than the truck stops/petrol stations), so you may want to pack accordingly....though you could always stop in Geelong and stock up before heading out onto the FWY.

and the casual weekend rides are even cheaper and better stocked . In Feb 2010, I rode around the Bay on a Saturday, with my bike the only one on the ferry, and it was very enjoyable. Then in Oct I did the official mass ride, and enjoyed it less than the Feb ride. I thought I should enter ATBIAD once just to see what the fuss is about, but I feel no great desire to repeat that.

What route do you take to get to Geelong when doing it on your own? I assume it's not the west gate or freeway?

At a guess - federation trail to Werribee then onto the highway. IIRC its illegal to cycle on the FWY between Werribee & City, definately is on the bridge.

How would you do a 210/250 km ride normally, Skull?

Exactly. We pay money to cycle routes that we can do for nothing (let's skip the bit about the Westgate being open for us on the day.)

It could be alot cheaper if they didnt impose the mandatory jersey purchase (and wearing of on the day)....but I can appreciate all the organisation etc that goes on behind the scenes. It is expensive but considering most of the sportif events could be ridden on any other weekend for free, you could argue the same for many.

The audax rides I have completed were non-supported, they only cost me $5 - $10

The other fondos/sportives I have completed that have asked up around the $100+ mark have had numerous feed stations along the route.

As is riding with friends or a corporate team.

The Challenge series rides are very well organised and only cost $200 for four events (120–160 km each) plus a series jersey if you sign up for all of them at once.

I come from a different region
so in ACT - Fitz's, the big Canberra bike ride and the ACT version of the 5 peaks.
in Tas - the opperman gran fondo and a few others.
