Around the Bay 2013

The sign-up page still says members only, but it allowed to me to purchase entry to the same route I did last year - 210km clockwise. I'm sure I could easily finish the 250 km now, but I'm keen to see how much improvement I can make on last year's effort (plus the clockwise route is cheaper...)

I'd agree if you'd done it a few times and wanted more of a challenge/new experience - but yeah, $165 for the clockwise route including a jersey I didn't have a problem with, hopefully some of the money goes towards funding BNV's advocacy work etc.djw47 wrote:$190 seems steep for entry for the 210km ride.

October 20, Sunday. If you've never done a really big event ride before (with 20,000+ riders), I definitely recommend it, it's quite an experience.eightsixboy wrote:So when is this?

They do advocacy work? I've only done the 100km in the past so I'll pay for it, it's my training motivation for the winter, but it seems a hell of a lot for a jersey, a ferry ticket and a free sandwich.

All the marketing, signage on the day, cars/trucks to drag everything around the 250+ km of road routes doesn't come cheaply. Imagine what it would cost if the majority of labour wasn't offered voluntarily!djw47 wrote:wizdofaus wrote:I'd agree if you'd done it a few times and wanted more of a challenge/new experience - but yeah, $165 for the clockwise route including a jersey I didn't have a problem with, hopefully some of the money goes towards funding BNV's advocacy work etc.djw47 wrote:$190 seems steep for entry for the 210km ride.

Most of that is paid for by sponsors I'd imagine given Bupa's name is most prominent on all signage etc. I'm doing it anyway so not bothered that much, just seems a lot of money to ride on a public highway that is open to traffic.

In the scheme of things I don't think it's too bad - and 15,000+ other riders will likely agree to pay the money again this year to participate (and pay the $12 for the jersey to be posted to them).
I imagine it would be quite a costly event to put together each year and whilst the sponsors foot the majority of the costs I suspect there are plenty of hidden costs along the way that we may not consider.
I've entered for the 250km option this year and am really looking forward to the training and the ride on the day!

Plenty of 'free' rides about the place - just jump on your new rocketship and pedal!
In all seriousness, there are heaps of rides going on all the time. There are cheaper ATB options - go to the Bicycle Victoria website and you'll find them. Google bicycle rides / events and you should see a few results returned.
cheers

I did the 210 km last year, and lost more than 40 minutes because of a ferry stuffup. Was a good experience in retrospect, but in the future I might be tempted to do that distance down to Sorrento and back, instead of the circuit.VRE wrote:I rode around The Bay once, starting and finishing in St Kilda - it was in Feb 2010, and I was the only cyclist on the ferry. Good luck to those that are going to do it this year for the first time. Can be a little daunting as fresh meat, but it is a great feeling of achievement when you make the finish line.

My tip would be to put yourself in a group faster than you think you're capable of - being in such a group is easily enough to add 4-5 k/h to your average speed, and the quicker you get down to the ferry the less likely it is that there's a significant wait. You can always take it easy on the way back if needed. I'm aiming to be on the first ferry from Sorrento.clackers wrote:I did the 210 km last year, and lost more than 40 minutes because of a ferry stuffup. I've signed up for the 4th year in a row but I only do the shorter 100km ride up from Sorrento. It's a great ride to get newbie mates to aim for and it's generally the first time they'll have ridden 100kms in one ride. All good fun.

Yep, doing it solo I was a leech off successive groups of good riders into the westerlies, dropping out the back to recover and wait for the next bunch of hosts.wizdofaus wrote:

There was a payoff with being pushed as if by angels back along the Princes Highway into Melbourne.
But at the ferry, it wasn't too many riders waiting to get on board, it was the cars, with cyclists having second priority.
Now, I like to bum around Sorrento, but there's a time and a place!

Can't say I had that problem last year...anyway I reckon if I can make the 9am ferry (means averaging about 33 k/h with no stops) there won't be too much delay.clackers wrote: But at the ferry, it wasn't too many riders waiting to get on board, it was the cars, with cyclists having second priority.

More power to you, Wiz, I'd take about 4 hours including lengthy stops to do the 100km down there.wizdofaus wrote: Can't say I had that problem last year...anyway I reckon if I can make the 9am ferry (means averaging about 33 k/h with no stops) there won't be too much delay.
Proudly a borderline Clydesdale.

It can be easily done, even with 2 people doing rolling turnswizdofaus wrote:Can't say I had that problem last year...anyway I reckon if I can make the 9am ferry (means averaging about 33 k/h with no stops) there won't be too much delay.clackers wrote: But at the ferry, it wasn't too many riders waiting to get on board, it was the cars, with cyclists having second priority.
