Grand Ridge Rail Trail

Grand Ridge Rail Trail

Postby VeloGiro » Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:29 pm

Hi folks - rode the Grand Ridge Trail Trail today from Boolara to Mirboo North (and back) ~ 26 k's of quiet and picturesque trail, predominantly climbing on a gentle grade all the way to Mirboo North - The trail winds through a mix of regenerating forests (after the '09 Boolara/Churchill fire), there were also large areas of burnt out pine plantations that are also regenerating but much slower than the native vegetation...the trail also skirts a section of the floodplain of the Little Morwell river that must be some of the nicest farm land that you would ever want to see...

The surface between the two (quite remarkable) bridges was freshly laid gravel and with recent rains it was pretty soft for a couple of k's...the rest of the trail was really quite good...no problems at all for our tandem with 26 x 1.5" tyres.

We were followed by a little Jack Russell for about 4 k's out of Boolara - we thought he would just turn around when he got a bit tired of running along side us - nope this was a determined little fella - we thought after 4 k's that he wasn't going to quit so we turned around and headed back to Boolara, asked a few of the locals if they knew the dog and where he lived...Turns out he is something of a local character...his name Hurley and from all accounts lives a free range existence. His house is not far out of town - we escorted him home...at least i think we escorted him - could have been the other way round!

Great day - great trail - worth the drive to get there...

Did a bit of this trail between Mirboo North and Darlimurla back in early 2011. It was as far as we could reach due to the ongoing issues from the bushfires. Great to read that it is now re-opened throughout, and it will now get added to my list of trail I need to complete down there.

Yep - Thoroughly enjoyed it too...so much that we are no planning a mini tour from Rosedale to Morwell - 1st night just out of Tarra Bulga NP in the Tarra Valley...Day Two - Grand Ridge Rd to Mirboo North, meal and drinks at the Brewery, accommodation Golf Course hotel...Day Three - roll into Morwell via rail trail - Yinnar - down hill all the way!. Aiming for Cup Day weekend for this one...
