Good old fashioned bike shop needed

Postby JimmyBH » Wed Jul 10, 2013 8:09 pm

Hello everyone,

Having just moved home from a long stint in Brisbane, I'm looking for a good, local(ish) bikeshop to go and be known at.

The thing is, I don't want a shop that specialises in the super high end $$$ impersonal stuff as I have one of those around the corner to take care of my good bike, but a good local shop with a Steptoe & son horde of bits and pieces and people there who know lots, old and new that can help with advice on the old steel racers I seem to have acquired.

In Brisbane I was lucky to live around the corner from Ridgeway Cycles, and for those that know it you'll know exactly what I mean.

Looking in the Fairfield/Kew/Balwyn/Ivanhoe type areas... with any luck.

Thanks, Jimmy

Finnigan Cycles at 507 High St Northcote, might be what you are after.

No really the areas you've mentioned, but:

Mottainai 41 Kerr St, Fitzroy is worth a visit, just for the experience even.

I'm big fans of Commuter Cycles in Brunswick

And I've heard good things about Abbotsford Cycles (tho haven't used them myself)

Sounds like Abbotsford Cycles will meet your needs very well... but maybe not so local.

Ivanhoe Cycles of course are very good (so I'm told by cycling mates) and in your area.
Mandatory helmet law?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll try to get around to each of them in the next week or two,

Distance-wise they are all reasonably similar from where I am near the Chandler hwy, so all good.

Thanks again. Jimmy

Abbotsford cycles is definitely the best for that. They don't even sell bikes only service and spare parts.

If you are not cashed up and looking to spend thousands the people at Ivanhoe cycles don't seem to want to know you. Thats been my recurring experience at Ivanhoe cycles.

I found them very helpful, I went in to buy a pump for $60 and they talked me into buying one for $25 as it had the same features as the $60 one.

Pedal Cyclery in Coburg is a one man band with a basic stock of quality parts and excellent service. He stocks a lot of great used parts as well at good prices, preferring not to see older bits go to waste.
