A friend and I are looking to do a weekend tour, probably travelling between two train stations, or a nice out and back loop.
At present my friend is limiting the distance to 50km per day. We would be heading out on Friday evening and would be happy to travel a short distance to a first night camping, then going around 50kms each day for Saturday and Sunday.
Can anyone suggest some route options on this? I'd rather not just do warby trail out and back.

You could put together a ride between Castlemaine and Ballarat ~100km with train each end.

I know this thread is old now but we started out with the Julia Blundon books and very soon after discovered MBTC Melbourne bicycle touring club. Massive wealth of knowledge on touring and cycling there.

How about the Great Victorian Rail Trail along the Goulbourn valley from Tallarook. http://www.greatvictorianrailtrail.com.au/

Geelong to Anglesea and back was our first loaded ride. We went south on Horseshoe bend Rd and then along the coast until the last few downhill k's on hwy into Anglesea. Wide shoulder so felt safe. We then took back roads home according to Blunden book but it might be a better ride along back roads to Birregurra for the train home. Il Padrone may be able to suggest a route to Birregurra as he led a ride from there to Lorne via Anglesea which was quite nice.
I think you can catch train beyond Geelong so you don't have to deal with traffic.

So, we made it!
We ended up riding 80 km from Ballarat to Maldon on the first day - only bad bit was neither of us remembered sunscreen. Camped at the Maldon Historic Reserve campsite just outside town - free, basic but fine for what we needed.
Day 2 we rode from Maldon to Ballarat, taking mostly main or semi-major roads rather than full on backroads. 40km

Nice one!
It's addictive. Never understood why at times when i was pushing into head wind on a flat boring stretch yet it's amazing how quickly your mind starts planning the next trip.

There is no route possible that gets you from Maldon to Ballarat in 40 kms . Not even in 80kms

No but there are regular trains from Bendigo to Melbourne and that would fit with the rest of the description.
