70km/h winds predicted tommorow. Ive never done it and have no intention to, feel for the people who have paid $200+ to ride home in those conditions, off the top of my head I reckon maybe 3 out of the last 5 years have been shocking days for wind. No wonder the numbers have halved.

Don't do it. Save your money.

Me? I'll feel pretty damn good when I've completed it.

Wind gusts up to 120kmh. One rider taken to hospital after a crash. Stay safe.

Those winds looked vicious. Not just strong but gusty too. Not much fun I suspect.

Have thought about doing Round the Bay, glad I didn't think to do it this year what with the wind, my cold and being tired after a long week at work.

Mate of mine is still out there. He Facebooked about two hours ago 'this is ridiculous'.

Now they are getting rained on for good measure.

When he gets back I'll ask him how hard it was compared to an ACE 250.

EDIT : He just updated FB - finished in 9 hrs.

Glad I only did the 100km Sorrento to Melb. Wind gust were stopping you almost dead in places.
Still about 4.5 hours avg speed 21km/h I will take that in those conditions....

The BNA kit got a good workout at least!

Kudos to everyone who rode today. That could not have been any fun.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

That was my 11th ATB, and by far the hardest.
Crossed the line 12:45 after starting, although only 9:07 of that was moving. I'm a little shocked that I averaged 26km/h for the 250 (well, its actually 240), it felt soooo much slower.

Low lights: The wind. Some of the crosswind sections felt pretty dangerous when there were gaps in the tree/houses/fences and you got that sudden burst. Most people were pretty sensible, and traveled cautiously, but it gives me chills thinking that quite a few people were probably blown onto the road. In an unexpected twist, I thought most drivers passing also seemed to be cautious in those sections which I feel helped the situation.

High lights: The wind. I rode on my own, but any conversation I had, and everytime I stopped at a light, the wind was a major topic of conversation. It felt very bonding. Cyclist vs the wind. I actually laughed out loud at one point when I could only manage 14km/h on a flat section straight into the guts of the wind. If I didn't laugh, I would've cried.
I really liked the course change that took us down the Esplanade near Mornington. Road was closed to traffic, and it was way more interesting than nepean hwy.
Also have to mention those chocolate crackle brownies they were serving in Geelong. Almost went back for a third (as I thought I needed the carbs) but the queue stopped me.

Wow, there was a section when doing the Portarlington loop (250 route) where you head back towards where we rejoined the 210-ers. I thought there was something wrong with my gears when it wouldn't change, only to discover I rang out of gears. Sat above 50 for a couple of kms, peaking at 56. The strava section which incorporated that bit ranked me 16 in the world. Not surprisingly, lots of people on that leader board got there today.

Better than the chocolate nazi back in Melb after the ride. I grabbed a small handful of mini chocs, and the choc nazi said sorry you can only have one!...

I went out for a ride to see them, from Sorrento to Mornington and back. Around 8.00. Radar said 37kmh when I left, 75kmh when I got back. That was ridiculous. Saw one bloke get blown over I think coming to a stop near Rye, didn't have time to unclip and over he goes into his mates. Maybe he just forgot to unclip? Going past Anthony's Nose was thrilling too. Lots of people were getting blasted into the road, and sandblasted by the sand whipped up.

And the AMG boys....the ones hanging on for dear life....they didn't disappoint. 30 kmh with a 50k tailwind doesn't really make you that tough

I think I'll take some time off the bike after that.
I overtook some people going uphill once.

Glad I wasn't there. I thought it might be better in the hills. Not really. 70kph cross gusts when you're descending at 50kph are... uncomfortable. Had a couple of branches fall on me too but only small ones :-)

Yeah I saw a few tandem's on that ride and wondered how they went! Hope the little girl with Down's Syndrome on a tandem got home ok (or at least to Frankston to catch the train!).

I got the results today and are quietly very chuffed at my 73rd out of 528 result (pretty good for rather large round man!) :-)

I just looked up my time too. What I found interesting is that of the 2104 people registered for the 210km anti clockwise, only 910 people had a recorded finish time. Presumably the rest chose not to start, or did not finish. Either way, its quite understandable, it was a hard day for a social ride.

The 'RaceResults' are stuffed, their timing didn't work for me. Rode alongside a mate who registered a time (pretty good one too...) but I got a DNS. Had the number mounted exactly the same on both bikes.

Also the range of times, even for the 60km ride, varied from around 1hr 34 to 9 or 10 hours as families and rec riders made a long day of it. So don't assume all those with no time or DNS didn't make it home. I reckon plenty would have slogged away to the end.

not sure on the stats but recorded a ferry time only because missed the start line running late and joined at the Spencer st / City rd junction finished the 210k at 8pm and I'm not sure how many other riders not bothered with the official timing or the cold slow start missed it out? - didn't finish until 8pm - slow rider anyway but used to riding in crappy weather - was like a summers day in the north of england :) plus nursed mrs antigee's friend who was over tired and unhappy in the wind to catch the train at frankston

organisation wise think was less toilets at the rest stops? - would be good if signposted the less obvious public toilets along the way

also when consider the entry fee and just short of 3000 riders (210+240) would be a lot more pleasant and safer if the shoulder on the freeway had been swept especially the on/off ramps and road junctions - saw the aftermath of one fall at the roundabout just before geelong plus numerous punctures

Was she on a red one, father looks early 50's or so? Mother riding along?

Yep sounds like the ones. They stopped very early on as well. Probably sounded like a good idea at the time :-)
