Mt Stirling

Postby hamishm » Sun Jan 01, 2017 6:11 pm

Does anyone have any experience with riding around Mt Stirling that they'd care to share? I'm interested in riding up the main climb and around the back to Mt Buller on the CX bike. Something like this: https://www.strava.com/routes/110248

Achievable? Worthwhile?

Oh that doesn't sound promising then! I plan to ride on 40mm gravel grinder tyres rather than 28mm road, but still...

Thanks for the link

roadie will have you limited to circuit road, and the surface is churned up by 4wd traffic so not ideal, cx would be ok if you look for lines in gravel road, ideal is mtb for gearing and tyres. and on mtb you can access horse trials and mtb network such as the epic mt buller xc trail, fantasic flow.

have a look at this route some big climbs and rocky descents with stunning mt buller views and some real back country wilderness;

Not interesting in MTBing, so looks like this is a no-go. Maybe just the main Mt Stirling climb some time, combined with a Buller trip or something. Now looking for other ideas...

I crazily did the Mount Stirling climb on 23mm tyres which was plane crazy. The descent was the bumpiest thing I've ever done. A tonne of rocks on that road. Great to climb, and incredibly difficult but you'd be wanting to run at least a 32mm tyre or MTB. I only got up to Kings Saddle and turned around. Looked like a great road to ride all the way to the top. The road splits about 8km into the climb. If you do it make sure you turn left at the top.
